Description Sapphire Dragon reference, done with coloured pencil 9th December 2008. Colours slightly modified on the PC (as the skanner already tried to eat the colours up anyway, might as well try make it a bit more vivid than the original paper-version).

This is a D&D style sapphire dragon, one of the neutral gem dragons species.

Sapphires are slender, or some say very thin, in build compared to other dragons. They are more dexterous as well, albeit less strong considering muscle-power than some other dragon type of their age.
Sapphire dragons could be considered anti-social as well as quite territorial - they rather live alone in solitude, rarely seeking out any of their own kind even, preferring their vast underground lairs in the Underdark or sometimes on the Elemental Plane of Earth. They do consider the evil denizens of their region as enemies, though, directly confronting them if they threaten the dragon's own grounds.
As masters of military strategy, they enjoy strategic games and favor discussions over tactics than any small talk - known to forgive intrusions, even, if the visitor offers a game of such type (of course letting the dragon lose is not too wise).
A sapphire dragon's scales do not change colour throughout its lifetime, but are rather one shade of twinkling blue; ranging from night-dark to light blue in hue. The scales reflect any source of light, creating many tiny scintillating glints on the walls of caverns.

(Later I might write a bit more about all the gem dragons I drew thus far, but right now I'm a bit impatient for that... I'm happy enough I finally finished this babe )

Comments always appreciated.

Are you going to make more of these? I think an onyx dragon would be neat, or if you want a challenge (I would think so), try opal.

I have to go look at the others now, awesome work. I was trying to find some more reference pictures of the gem dragons which isn't easy (I'm working on a 4e update for them, and plan on including pictures if I can get myself in the mood to do it, this helps^^). I actually rather like the pictures in the MM2, if undetailed, they have a kind of cool look to them. However, more perspectives would have been nice and there don't seem to be any other official pictures done. I'm going to go look now, but if you haven't you should draw Sardior the ruby dragon too. And Blithen and an obsidian dragon too.

Yeah, it's a Dungeons & Dragons dragon. All my dragons here on dA are from D&D. I'm drawing references for the gem dragon species because their original illustrations in D&D supplements (Monster Manual II) were not so "detailed" as the other dragon types of the game (the chromatic/evil dragons and the metallic/good natured ones). I thought they needed to be more fleshed out, so to speak... so here's what I tried so far.

you know, you should have been the original artist if that's the case you sure could be.

YAY more D&D gem dragons! I'd love to see more, pleeeease? ^^ It's wonderful, the way you've used almost the whole range of blues. The pose is awesome too, almost like he's just spotted you watching him from behind a bush. Eeep!

lol yup, sort of ^.^ He's not really the type to tolerate paparazzis (sp?) I would think, so I guess the "what are You looking at?" look is quite fitting.

And thanks so much for the comment!!! I need that piece of encouragement on the gem dragons hehe... I always think a bit that some people might think it's geeky to draw 'em in the first place, not to mention that some could think I'm crazy for drawing almost exclusively dragons. (For those folks out there.. I can't help it!!! They threaten me every night to draw them so they can get more worshipers, I'm -forced- to do this or they feed me to the homework-for-school monsters!)
So... cough. Anyway. The gem dragons -shall- be done! Already made a sketch for the topaz...
