Shadow Empire Territory, Near the Druentia River

Nocturne had been moving numbly through Shadow Empire’s territory. What had been a patrol had quickly become Nocturne shuffling around by themselves. You pause to work your hindquarters out of a snow drift for a minute and the rest of the patrol leaves you behind. Which worked fine for Nocturne. Let them worry if they want, the snow leopard knew how to make their way back to camp from here anyways. For now they moved alongside the river they found themself upon, listening to the gentle trickle of water go by in the otherwise frozen tundra. Everything was peaceful. The apprentice closed their eyes and inhaled.
The peace remained intact for approximately five minutes more before an urgent scuffle transpired towards the south. Nocturne whipped their head around, eyes narrowing and legs changing directions. Couldn’t be prey or predator. Was too heavy to be anything smaller than a squirrel, and it was too light to be something later than a boar. Nocturne’s assumption…? A hunter.
The snow leopard stuck low to the ground, allowing nature to do its thing and hide them within the snow covered swampland. Slowly, they slunk to the trees, staying on the edge to look within. Eventually, their search proved to be fruitful and a light, creamy colored pelt sprinted forward. It looked as if the cat was engaged in a chase, or perhaps being chased themself.
Nocturne decided on the prior, and halted a growl from coming from their throat. There was absolutely no way Nocturne was letting a hunter take one of their empiremates. Devroop must be smiling on the nonbelievers today.
Silent as the snow itself, Nocturne struck forward and reared their head into their opponent’s side. The offending cat let out a yelp of panic and skidded until their body slammed against a tree.
The snow leopard growled and stalked forward, prepared to rush in with fangs if the hunter gave any sign of attack. Before she spoke.
"W-Wait! Wait!" She tried to stand, but flinched. On closer inspection it looked like a much larger cat had clamped their mouth down on her leg. "I’m s-sorry for trespassing I was being chased by a hunter!"
Okay. Perhaps the situation had been the latter rather than the former. Cats make mistakes. Nocturne was quiet but tilted their head, urging her to continue.
"I was hunting over in Lightning territory when I was ambushed— honestly. I wasn’t trying to prods into another empire’s territory, that’s just what happened!"
Nocturne sighed and thought about it for a moment. She could be lying. This could still be a hunter. But looking at that expression of pure fear and seeing the way she shook… Nocturne was a master manipulator and as such they felt they understood cats very well. And this, this didn’t seem like any sort of manipulation. Besides, at a closer examination, she didn’t possess any scent they’d associate with the city. They assumed rabbits and fresh mint were a depleting source up there.
Nocturne sighed and moved forward. Plopping on their rear once they reached her side. "Get on. Let’s see if we can get you some help."
The lynx heisted for a moment, but slowly, she climbed atop Nocturne’s back.
It was a weird sensation, carrying a live creature up there. Her belly was warm and her breath on their neck caused his fur to prickle. Nocturne took a glance around before starting their careful trek back to Shadow’s camp.

Quite a while ago, Nocturne met the lightning apprentice Nimue after she was chased into Shadow territory. Since they were at least at partial fault for rendering the small lynx immobile. (Although Nocturne and Rafael never saw eye to eye, Nocturne was completely honest about the situation.) Rafael assigned Nocturne to take care of her in the months she resided in Shadow territory recovering. A rather infuriating task, but Nocturne accepted it nevertheless.
