Early in the year, President Obama announces that nuclear testing would cease by the end of the year. Protests against the tests in various major American cities had been increasing in recent years.
In the Midterms, Democrats gain control of both houses of Congress. Reports of misconduct of many Republican incumbents may have contributed to this win.
The Cascadian Uprising begins with striking workers capturing the Seattle City Hall in early March.
The Shoshone territory is added to Idaho.
Star Trek: Enterprise is cancelled. There wouldn’t be another Star Trek series for another 11 years.

Southern England is united with Mercia-Wessex-Northumberland to form England. This follows the ‘reunification’ two years earlier when Southern England joined the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom’s capital begins moving from Nottingham to London. The Palace of Westminster is chosen as a temporary Parliamentary meeting place, but would become permanent by default.
Daniela Shillingsworth, a noted archaeologist and adventurer retires from her professorship at Oxford. She donates her notes and those of her predecessors to the Bodleian.

Chris arrived at Mary White College for what he was sure was the penultimate time, that the next time he would come up to Armidale it would be for his Graduation. As he entered, he ran into someone he hadn’t expected to run into straight away.
“Chris?” a female voice asked.
“Bec?”
“You’re here for the exams?” she asked.
“Just one exam. Then If I pass, I can get my degree,” he explained.
“I see.”
Bec helped Chris bring his luggage up to the room he would be staying in, including his computer. “I should say, I’m seeing someone else,” Bec said.
“Really?” Chris asked in surprise.
Bec nodded.
“I haven’t done much. Trying to find a job.”
“I have been going to the discussion series though.”
“That’s good. But I suppose it wouldn’t be running in exam time,” Chris groused.
“No, but we have been talking about Russian expansionism.”
“That would have been interesting to have been involved in.”
“And about what’s been happening in America,” Bec added.
“Cascadia. I’m not sure what exactly they are fighting the Feds about.”
“Neither am I.”
A Federal Election is held later in the year. The Coalition, led by John Howard, loses to Labor. Kevin Rudd becomes Prime Minister.

The Marshall Islands leave the Commonwealth.
Nauru gains independence from Papua New Guinea.
Antarctica
The last attempt at a non-scientific settlement, Erebus City, shuts down after the last of the would-be settlers leave, returning to their countries of origin.
