Description
In the early 2010s, during the transition away from Constellation, a station similar in role to the Gateway now planned was proposed. It would have been built as much as possible from existing surplus hardware (Node 1 structural test article, modified MPLMs, Shuttle Airlock as a utility module, Russian surplus service module). Unlike Gateway, though, it would have been assembled at ISS, using modified EELVs for delivery, and then be separated and boosted to cislunar orbit by a large tug. This allows easier outfitting, and a few years of service augmenting ISS's capabilities, while the launch vehicle needed for Orion to go past low Earth orbit is developed.
