Description
-Round One-
“They can’t be serious.” Snake muttered to himself, staring with a mixture of disbelief and scorn at the monstrous silhouette awaiting his approach in the distance. Someone had it out for him. There was no other explanation to such a preposterous situation as this.
His sparring partner was Brutus!? The size difference was far from discrete. The giant of a horse was over three hands taller, his coat marred with battle scars, and he was considerably older. On top of all that he was an elite. Only a miracle could save him now…
No! Get ahold of yourself! Snake scolded, shaking his head irritably. He couldn’t allow himself to lose before the sparring had even begun! He continued to head in Brutus’s direction, unwavering in stride. He was not about to give way to anxiety. He had been training hard for the war and was eager to take his place on the frontline! Not even Brutus would stand in his way! If he lost to the larger stallion, his hopes of joining in the great battle were done for. The calculating equine began to contemplate as he drew nearer to his rival. Size and brute force were obviously not his strong points in this match, but his lithe, thoroughbred physique allowed for greater speed and swifter movement than the other’s bulky frame might permit.
By this time, Snake had reached his sparring partner, and took his place in front of the opposing stallion. He had to admit, he had always felt a compulsory admiration for Brutus. His status within the herd as a skilled fighter, not to mention his overpowering size, demanded it really. But now was no time to ponder on such topics, for now this horse was his adversary…and the only thing standing in his way of charging into battle. He dipped his head respectfully, a nonchalant expression plastered to his face. He just had to give this what he had…that was all. “You ready for this?” he asked, his silky voice tainted by the sneer curling up his maw.
It had to be some sort of joke.
Brutus dully stared down the smaller statured appaloosa, clearly thinking the same thing. Fate was a cruel mistress, and the draft shook the corded muscles of his neck, stepping forward. As an elite, even if the spotted brat couldn't beat him, Brutus would at least be able to teach him a few things for when the true battle came to be.
With a quick analysis, he deduced the stallion appeared to be quick and agile at best, but it would take more than just speed to bring someone like the roan down.
"You ready for this?"
He had to smirk at that. The stud had moxie. "Certainly, question is, are you?" He snorted, his stance lowering to a defensive crouch, something that was still taller than his adversary.
Snake suppressed the urge to swallow nervously and instead snorted, tossing his head and stamping a hoof to get the blood flowing before backing away again, putting another pace or two between himself and the massive chunk of flesh they classified as a horse. It couldn't be natural...his size that is. The appaloosa blinked, trying to clear his head, his artificial sneer still in place. "I was born ready." He replied, his voice oozing and cocky as he shook away the remnant surface layers of his unease. He took his stance. It didn't look like much, more of a pose really. His muscles were tensed and poised, prepared to propel him into flight and possibly swing around his larger opponent and try to attack from behind. Altogether, it may have been a rather poor choice, he hardly appeared ready to take on a horse nearly ten times his size.
But that's what comes of one used to fighting weaker or relatively matched opponents, he wasn't quite sure how to respond. Whenever conflict arose with a stallion he didn't expect to win against, he either had a gang of others to back him up or found a means of evading the more powerful force, neither of which were an option here. The background was originally in color and it was way too cheery for the atmosphere so I sucked the saturation out of it xD Brutus doesn't WANT to beat Snake to a pulp obviously, and wants the sparring to be more educational than anything.

Dang, Brutus looks freaking intimidating in this-- he's huge! Snake sure as heck has a good reason to be nervous.
The positioning of these two looks wonderful, and I absolutely love the way you did the background; it really brings out the characters. Your art is great!!

Omg, I'm so scared for Snake in this picture. Brutus is MASSIVE!
Love the poses, and it's really cool how you pulled the focus to them by having the background be in greyscale.

I love their size difference! XD (My character Tem was facing a mare 5 hands taller than him, hahaha.) It makes their pose even more dramatic. And look at Snake's flowy mane and tail! Super nice.

I can feel the tears flowing x'D
Seems we both had the idea for dreary backgrounds. At least I tried to make mine look dreary anyway x'p
