Half healed and walking again, the Stray spots the carcass of an animal picked at by a skinny, wild looking dog. The hound pays his approach no heed, and they sit together in the dry grass under the soupy gray sky chewing dried strips of blackened meat off the ribs of a dead bull. When the Stray the leaves, the dog, which looked to him more like a little shrunken wolf than a dog, followed a short but even distance behind, keeping pace.
