usually they are, since you know, it's pretty easy to remove da's watermark in photoshop. anyone enough skilled can remove anyone, just some equalize/antireflect filters.
also, as another artist who's again the watermarks thing, i guarantee you that posting a watermark will decrease the quality of your artwork by 60%. in other terms, it's just useless.
finally, just adding a signature or a copyright line on a corner, like an url, makes it, and it shows, in a way, that you have faith in your public. they usually gives it to you in return.
(and it's not like anyone could sell a poster out of a 600x900pixels picture, i'm pretty confident about this. )
