My goal is to make the usual digital painting style, but when I got to the 3rd phase in this image I was REALLY tempted to make it into a comic style. I think that image looks super cool. I can just see it all cleaned up looking like a Mobeus illustration.
The colors were really hard. If I was trying to be 100% realistic it would be easier. But I'm going for a surreal-fantasy look and so there were no limitations. Not having limitations can drive you crazy - because there are too many options. After an hour of going crazy I finally decided that the terrain was DEFINITELY rock, and that had to be a brown rock color. So brown-orange became my foundation, and VOILA! Finally the other colors came about.
Because... problem being... the idea with this style of painting is to have a foundation color, and all of the other colors are a "subtle" variation of that foundation color. Meaning, the other colors are close on the color wheel to the original color. This gives a unified foundation. It makes everything in the scene look connected.
That's how I get all the foundation colors. Later I can add some crazy colors to contrast everything and add energy to the scene.
