Description

A drawing based on The Great Cave Offensive from Kirby Super Star (and Ultra). This one took me by far the most time to draw (all the recordings put together in my video editor added up to 36 hours). 103 layers too. I have a ton of stuff to talk about with this one. I learned a new trick in MyPaint while making it which allows me to use bucket fill with less opacity. This allowed me to make translucent objects like the crystals as well as the layers of darkness, which allow areas further into the background to be portrayed darker than that of closer objects, and also allows me to further control the lighting by erasing areas that are supposed to be on the brighter side. Since this is an underground cave, I made it really dark. The only problem with this new trick is that it makes MyPaint lag A LOT, so I unfortunately had to hide the layers for most of the process, and had to guess where the light would shine. Another new thing with this drawing that I did was some community involvement. First I asked my siblings what their favorite treasures were. The answers were the Koopa Shell, the Crystal Ball, and the Orichalcum (though at first my older brother said the Glass Slipper, so I ended up including it as well). The helper and enemies included were also my siblings' choices, I had them draw to see who gets the helper spot, and my younger sister got the highest number, so it ended up being Waddle Doo. Then I, with no context, asked folks on Twitter what their favorite treasures in The Great Cave Offensive were. Most answered more than one, but since there was only a few people who answered, I ended up including ALL of the favorites. The answers were Kong's Barrel, Falcon Helmet, Triforce, Season's Heart, Phanto Mask, Three-Star Cane (voted twice), Falchion, Power Paintbrush (voted twice), Ancient Gem, Machine Parts, and the Cell Phone. I also included some of my favorites, being the Shiny Bamboo, Pegasus Wing, and the Mannequin. I also ended up including the Gold Crown as a filler one purely because I thought it'd look nice on top of Waddle Doo. Another first is that Plasma Wisp is probably the first time I've ever shaded a flame (in this artstyle anyway), and I think I did a pretty solid job. All in all, this is probably my best work yet. I'm so relieved to unveil this to the public, because between the new stuff I learned and the community involvement, I couldn't wait to finally get this one out there.

While normally the timelapse video would come up shortly after I upload the drawing, this time is kinda different because the length of the video is making it extremely hard to export the sped up version. I had to restart the process in parts, so the video should come up a day or maybe even days later. Apologies if you were hoping to see the video ASAP.

EDIT: The video is out.
