BACKGROUND
=======================

Marion: "I believe this is your door.  We do need to mark these things better!"

Candi: "So...my cellmate...is she arriving today?"

Marion: "Shaking like a leaf, but yes.  It's more a protective deal than anything.  Water-manipulating Marlquaanite.  Affadidah's men broke into her home and killed her family, no doubt with intent to rape her.  She ran out of patience quickly with that nonsense, and fought back.  But she insists it was self-defense.

She never imagined we'd have to arrest her anyway.  And even with her power, she's barely even 17.  Maggie's scared of jail.  Yet, bringing her here keeps her out of Affadidah's courts, where they'd surely get everyone killed trying to sentence her to death."

Candi: "They all drowned?"

Marion: "The one...she exploded every blood vessel in his body."

Candi: "Uh...I don't know the limits to my healing factor."

Marion: "She's not gonna feel threatened by you.  You're a nympho with centipede powers, here on a failure-to-appear charge, for a medical exam that should not have been required of you in the first place.  And you said it yourself: Erin threw out your mail.  But the law won't let us cut you any slack.  Doesn't stop me from being nice to you every chance I can get away with it."

Candi (tearing up): "Thank you.  I was supposed to stay till the end of the football game.  Donte and I even talked about saving ourselves for marriage.  I miss that taking matters into my own hands that I did with Danny, way too much.  When the day comes I'm no longer required to live under Erin's house, I want to come clean.  I will tell her that I'm leaving, and that I deserve to.

I can't follow her one rule: no sex.  I failed.  I lured Donte away from that game.  I talked him into heading to the house.  He just wanted to be near me, no matter what that entailed.  I was so caught up in the moment, I would've probably forgot the meeting until the last minute anyway.  Sex was too important.  This is...exactly what I deserve.  Because to protect myself and others, and Erin, I have to constantly lie to her!  And I hate myself for it!"

Marion: "Imaki isn't perfect either.  He knows you have a problem, then does very little about it.  Too distracted.  I know you're not the same indomitable teen that went to Madison all those years ago.  Too many loved ones dying, as you were unable to save them?"

Candi: "Yes.  I've had to grow up a lot since then.  Even long after leaving Madison, I've been replaying the scene over and over.  I know what I did wrong.

Extract teleporter form wardrobe first, then run, then check siren direction, then teleport if they're too close by.  Then, change in the woods.  Don't stop mid-parking lot and start opening backpack.  I was angry.

I was supposed to have the perfect romantic moment with my boyfriend of the time.  I was intending to get pregnant.  We were gonna get married.  Everything was going to end well.

Then, they burned his house down.  I wanted to make them pay.  I got sloppy.  I reached for the backpack in the middle of that parking lot, knowing there was a chance I'd get mistaken for the enemy.  I was so stupid!  And clearly, I've got a ways to go still yet."

Marion: "You want to grow up too fast.  But even adults should still obey the 10 Commandments, ideally.  They're not just intended for mindless recitation by schoolchildren, you know."

Candi: "How many strikes do I have now?"

Marion: "Don't do that to yourself!  Darius will always look for a way to put you in for life.  And I know you're not half the criminal he wants to paint you to be.  God decided why you must be, and why you must be here.  You should decide how best to honor that.

It's not up to Darius to paint you in ways that don't match reality, to suit his personal agenda.  Don't let Darius dictate your life to you.  He has done the exact opposite of earning it - in spite how this looks!"

Candi: "Again, thank you.  You're talking to me like an aunt, not like an arresting officer."

Marion: "I hate most corrections officers.  Pathetic psychopaths.  They think everyone like you in chains must be a murderer or rapist, and that they're excused in being unprofessional when dealing with you.

I can't wait until Lex takes over for his father.  He'll put a stop to that!  In SCALLOP, at least.  I can't speak for other jurisdictions.  And as for the other comment: I know you miss your one foster mother.

When you most needed an Earthly father and mother, this world has bent over backwards and hernia'd itself just to deprive you of them!"

Candi: "Speaking of professional...I don't know if we should be getting that close.  Though...I would be honored to have an aunt.  Can't say I know what that's like."

Marion: "We gotta get you your time served, graduate you, and clean up your filthy addiction.

Me adopting you legally is out of the question.  If I had a niece though...I'd want her to be like you.  Well...minus the nymphomania and missing court-ordered appointments."

Candi (smiling, painfully): "Nolo contendere."

Realizing some time was passing, Marion started undoing Candi's belly chain and leg irons.  It was time to put Candi in her cell, and lock her in.  Slack time to socialize would soon be at an end.

Candi: "You said Maggie shakes like a leaf?"

Marion: "You're as intimidated by her as she is at the thought of you.  She doesn't want to use her power anymore.  It's gotten her in too much trouble.  In spite the fact that she could've killed us when we apprehended her, she complied.

She wants a cure.  We can't do that right now.  But she fears whoever we put her in with is going to force her.  I saw how quickly you befriended Sadie Klink.  If you can do for Maggie Contor what Sadie did for you to cheer you up since you first got here in tears, then I have faith you can prevent her from meltdowns.  Without all that 1980s WIP drama garbage."

Candi: "Ugh, don't insult me!  I'm not a lesbian!  I find that stuff dumb anyway!"

Marion: "You do know how to put on a front sometimes like you're invincible.  But your armor is cracking.  I can only imagine Sadie's just a slightly older version of that same dilemma.  I'll have someone keep an eye on her too.  The two of you are very depression-prone."

Candi: "Depression?"

Marion: "Your sexual appetite could be considered suicidal by some, given the danger you put yourself in."

Candi: "So I'm going from jail to the nuthouse?"

Marion: "Hopefully not.  I'll see if I can get you in some counseling sessions while you're staying here, so we don't need any...extra steps."

Candi: "Appreciated.  I'll...try not to let it show that I'm afraid to share a cell with a shaking leaf that can make my arteries explode with only a thought!"

Marion: "It's just for today.  If we get good results, we'll transfer her to another cell, and move you in with Sadie.  That is...until Sadie's ready for transport to SWCC."

Candi: "Then what?"

Marion: "If we can't find you a roommate right away, we'll put you in solitary until we can.  Double rooms are for pairs, not solos."

Candi: "Thanks for the heads up, at least.  You're the best, Marion!"

Marion: "Me?  Clearly, you haven't met Shaniqua Tamery yet."

Marion finally removed Candi's handcuffs, then waved goodbye as she locked Candi in.  Candi was at the point of dread wherein which she would've preferred solitary.  Exploding arteries over a thought was not her cup of tea!

NOTES
===============

I made this image in response to this video .  Like so many others I hear, the single biggest problem in many of these places are not the inmates themselves, oddly enough, but guards who are bad at their jobs.

Ironically enough, it's not an actual, full-time CO that's escorting Candi; but a quasi-governmental federal-level agent.  Supposedly, in real life, they're even more insufferable.  Marion is an example of what someone in such a position of power can be.  Alas, many are simply not willing to apply themselves to that degree.

Any idiot can oversimplify another's complicated situation to excuse treating them like garbage.  It takes a certain caliber of personality to want to appeal to an errant's remaining humanity, to bring out the best in them even as they're paying for their mistakes.
