GBC Link's Awakening Marin. Me being a masochist, I made nearly all of this in MediBang Paint. I wanted it to be EXACT exact but I'm not desyncing the ocean, jeez.How any of this? Well… Using YouTube screenshots and YellowAfterlife's Pixel Scaling Tool, I got the sprites needed for the BG. Used Sprite Resources for everything else. Then checking every frame seeing how the text moves ("," and "." while paused on YouTube). Early on, I'd made the text sequence its own transparent upscaled PNGs to be added later. Before upscaling, reviewing pixiv Ugoira .zip's from Danbooru for image size and duration. Stuck with 800x720.
(800x720 was too big for pixiv, needing to be condensed using 150 PNGs instead of the GIF; could've spent extra time making lower res or just used original res PNGs but SOMEONE purposefully didn't make copies of the original res text boxes before upscaling them all—what a hassle.)
Waves move every 8 frames; eyes every 96* frames. Had to write down what pieces change every frame (001-1-1-2 — Text Box :: Eyes :: Wave Top :: Wave Bottom), plus the text freezes the waves. I did an abridged version; the waves end up desynced in-game. Then using my notes, making separate PNGs for all 286 frames, then adding the 136 text frames afterward. Added SFX from noproblo.dayjo.org. Then finally using Pencil2D to export the GIF and MP4.
If I'd wanted to be EXACT exact, 3 colors + transparency per 8x8 tile. Also desyncing the ocean.
This is how you probably not do an animation but oh well. Started on August 9th, 2022 and completed October 5th, 2022 with on-and-off work. Took inspiration from Saiwai Hiroshi (幸ひろし).
