...Even if You've Never so Much as Heard of it Before
Hi everyone! ButteredRobot here, but you can call me Shea! Two years ago, I learned how to crochet with zero knowledge of the craft. I want to share with you what got me started, and how I went from knowing nothing to opening an Etsy using nothing but the internet!
First off, let me just say that I'm pretty much as amateur as it gets. Everything I've learned has been through online tutorials and lots of practice to figure out what works best for me. I'm just getting into this game, so I'm not exactly equipped to do any real tutorials, but I can help you find your passion for yarn! There's a lot I don't know, but I know enough to help you get on your feet.
I'm going to tell you what helped me most and give you some advice that I wish I'd had when I was starting.
So for a little background, let me tell you why I got into crochet. Like most late teens/early twenties kids, I was in a state of crisis. I was stressed like I'd never been before, I was staying in community college longer than any of my friends, I was failing calculus and felt like my entire career path was crumbling before me, and I was missing the sense of family and community I depended on in my years of high school marching band. With all of that, the beginnings of anxiety and depression took root, though that was only recently diagnosed. It's something nobody should have to go through but so many of us do. I had hit a particular low when the day came that I ran an errand to Joann's and found myself staring down the yarn aisle.
Now, if any of you are as thrilled by colors and soft things as I am, you might understand the draw:
Something about staring at stacks of yarn balls as far as the eye could see lifted my spirits. Determined to cling to anything that stirred any hint of positive emotions, I decided then and there that I was going to buy some yarn -- all I needed was an excuse to do so.
There I was, a nineteen-year-old kid who had never made anything craftier than perler sprites, whipping out my phone and searching "crochet for absolute beginners" on Google in the middle of a crafts store. Why crochet, you might be thinking? I had tried knitting in the fourth grade and failed miserably so I knew I didn't want to knit, and crochet was one of the only other things I knew to do with yarn. Honestly, at the time, I wasn't sure whether I was thinking of crochet or macrame... I still don't know what macrame is. After nervously plodding around the yarn aisles for at least half an hour and managing to find a pattern (a set of instructions explaining how to crochet a project), I flagged down an employee who looked at me like I must have been in the wrong place, and I asked them what they'd recommend for someone with no experience.
Now let me tell you what they told me, why I ignored them, and why I obviously should have taken advice from someone who knew what they were talking about.
The first thing they showed me was what kind of yarn works best for beginners. It was all stuff like this:
Solid colors, straight yarn, basic stuff. The particular yarn they recommended is "worsted weight." A yarn's weight is the thickness of the yarn, not how much it weighs, which is just the beginning of a long list of strange names having to do with yarn. There are a few different ways that patterns/yarn companies measure yarn weight, and my personal favorite is the number system, where 0 is the thinnest and 6 is really bulky. "Worsted" is number 4 -- I don't know why it's called worsted. I'm not sure anyone knows why it's called worsted. 3 is called "DK," and I have no clue why that is, either (Donkey Kong?). 0 is "lace" and 6 is "super bulky," which seem to make a bit more sense, but it's still dicey. The good news? You don't need to know any of that stuff to get started. Look for this guy I circled in pink on any yarn label:
As far as I know, this is a universal indicator of the yarn's weight, and this 4 is the perfect place to start. This is the kind of yarn you should get. The solid colors and medium thickness make your work really easy to see so you can actually count your stitches and understand what you're doing. You know what yarn you shouldn't get for your first try?
This stuff. The fluffy stuff, the multicolored stuff, the wiggly, soft, variegated and utterly gorgeous stuff. The picture above is what's left of the first yarn I ever purchased (Lion Brand Homespun -- Purple Haze), which is absolutely impossible to learn anything with, unless you're some kind of crochet prodigy (or at least significantly more intelligent than me). If you don't have a good idea of what you're doing, you can't see a single well-defined stitch in all this lovely fuzz, so you're better off leaving it alone until you're more experienced. Don't be like me -- don't ignore the employees at the craft store. There's a chance you might not know better than them just because you really, really like how yummy that yarn looks.
The next thing you're going to need is a crochet hook. This is the easiest part! Every yarn label is going to tell you what size hook you'll need. You'll find it in the same place as the yarn weight:
Hooks are another thing that have inscrutable naming conventions. In this circled area, you'll see it says 5.5 mm at the top and I-9 at the bottom. Just like "worsted" means 4, "I-9" means the hook has a 5.5 millimeter width. Hooks are usually sold very close to the yarn, and any nice employee will point them out for you. Their packaging could say either "5.5 mm" or "I-9," so just keep your eye out and you're all set! (Different yarns sometimes call for different hook sizes, even if they're still weight 4. Another common hook size for worsted yarn is "H-8," which is 5 mm across.) I'd recommend just getting the one hook you need to start with, then you can decide later whether it would be worthwhile for you to invest in buying a whole set of different sized hooks.
Now, the last thing I'll talk about as far as gathering supplies goes is the gauge. I'll save you the trouble now: a gauge isn't something you buy, though you'll see it listed on most patterns. A gauge is a measurement of how many stitches it should take you to make a certain sized patch of material. It is not something you need to worry about while you're starting off with simple patterns -- to this day, I've never once measured my own gauge! With your new yarn and hook, you're ready to get started!
You've got the stuff, now where to begin?

HappyBerry is the only reason I've become remotely proficient in crochet. Her tutorials are incredibly easy to follow, and the best part of the video medium is that you can pause it and rewind as many times as you need to get the hang of things.
If you're happy learning from pictures and text, bluprint's tutorial on how to begin crocheting also does an excellent job of taking you step by step through every part of the process and gives some great tips and tricks! (You'll find a lot of the same advice there that I've given here.) Honestly, just googling "crochet for absolute beginners" will never fail to give you the resources you need to get started, and will likely lead you to these two sources and many other helpful websites, videos, and tutorials!
Still, I won't sugarcoat it. Even with all the help in the world, first learning to read crochet patterns can feel like learning a new language. Everything is abbreviated with a lot of sc, dc, hdc, st, sp, sctog, dctog, hdctog, and many, many more. Nobody picks this part up right away! Sticking with it and practicing is really the only method for getting used to reading, and there are no rules against keeping a guide to abbreviations handy .
Finally, the most important part of learning to crochet is going at your own pace.
Just like any other art, your first few tries are going to be far from perfect. You're going to have to start over, it'll be uneven, you'll think you know what you're doing and find out it's actually wrong and have to go again from scratch, but don't lose hope! It's perfectly fine. If it really frustrates you, there's no reason to force yourself to do it, but if you manage to stick with it and find yourself enjoying the rhythm, crocheting can become a wonderful and even therapeutic force in your life. Even with my clumsy introduction to the craft two years back, I have since collected a massive stash of yarn (especially since I know enough now to work with the fluffy, multicolored stuff!), I crochet during all my lecture classes, and I've opened my own little Etsy.

In the end, it's hard to feel so down about yourself when you've made something out of a ball of string. Every time I complete a project, I'm still astonished that I've created a hat or a bag or a scarf out of nothing, and it doesn't seem like that feeling will ever go away.
