Description
***There was nothing--no optic glass and no indentations marking where eyes should be. His visor attached to a horizontal port protruding from the bridge of his nose. The bare connecting pins glistened eerily in the gloomy light."You're blind!" Jazz gasped. He took a momentary step backwards to make sense of this new realization. Mechs with such a severe physical flaw were often destroyed before a Spark could enter their body. Whoever was checking must have gotten lazy the day Prowl rolled by. "I had no idea...Prowl...how do you--"
"My visor translates electromagnetic waves through oscillators within my central processors. Every color has its own frequency. By observing them I quite literally feel my environment. Light, shadows, even the frequencies of different colors. I 'see' better at close range, however, and I can watch television and read text as long as it contrasts against the background." Prowl said, speaking as if he'd rehearsed it. He thumbed the edge of his visor while he held it in his palm. His servos were fraught with tension, the rigidity not allowing even a tremble to escape his body.
"You can't wire a line to your visual processors?"
Prowl's lips tightened against his front teeth. "I don't have any visual processors."
Wow...that's a big mess-up on the assembly line. Jazz's gaze flicked between the visor and Prowl's eyeless, rain-soaked face. The explanation of how the visor worked made sense, but he couldn't imagine being able to interpret a bunch of buzzing inside his head. In fact, he couldn't even imagine having no visual perception at all. He just couldn't fathom it.
"What about Sari's key?" he asked.
Prowl shook his head. "Sari's key can't repair me. She utilized it once before and only the injuries I sustained at the time were healed. The key can't give me what I never had."
Jazz forcefully squelched a wave of pity. No, pity was for those who were utterly helpless and Prowl proved himself fully capable of handling himself. But he still felt bad that Prowl couldn't see the beauty of the sunsets he so dearly loved. He didn't know what a flower truly looked like. A bunch of vibrations couldn't possibly replace rainbows or the sheen of light dancing over waxed chrome.
"It is my greatest...shame," Prowl went on without emotion. "Do you have any idea what a compactor feels like, Jazz?"***

**EDIT**
And yes, I did give him lips. I always draw lips. Prowl's are rather cute because they're so small and naturally pout ^^

This was such a neat idea! ^_^ What an interesting place to take the character. I like the explanation of the oscillators; it seems like a pretty good compensation for having no eyes. I wonder how Prowl managed to get that, though...Did he build the visor himself?
This is especially interesting to me because I have an original character with a similar problem, only instead of no optics, Gyrstrife doesn't have a *face* under his visor. His dermaplating just stops where the visor is set into his face, so he's got a normal jaw and mouth and lips, but nothing above that. So if the visor were shattered or torn off somehow, he'd have a bunch of exposed circuits and blinky lights from about where his nose should be on up. XD He's also colorblind, since the visor doesn't have any connection with his visual processors. Not quite the same thing as what you've got going with Prowl here, but I thought it was neat. I made Gyr in reaction to a string of fics where characters like G1 Optimus Prime and Soundwave had regular mouths under their masks, or Jazz had eyes under his visor... I don't care now as much as I did then, but that's where I was coming from. Did you have a similar idea?
Anyway, I'm off to go review your awesome fic. XD Keep up the good work!

Oh I always imagined Optimus having a mouth under his mask. A sexy one at that Specially in Armada where I think he'd have a really pretty, boyish face(I wrote somewhere that he wears the mask to look more serious since without it he doesn't "look military").
He might have built it with the help of other flawed mechs who had eyesight--you'll see what I mean in the fic. And blindness varies amongst their kind too. Anything from no light perception to seeing pixels to just some slight resolution problems.

Yeah...Like I said, it doesn't bother me as much now as it did several months ago. I actually really like the way you write about Armada Optimus having a mouth. I can see him covering himself up like that to look more serious. And it was so sad in...was it Walls? When Megatron was dying and got him to take off the mask, then made him promise not to wear it anymore...I teared up. ;.;
Oh, okay. I must have missed that implication somehow...it didn't occur to me that the other mechs in the scrap yard might have helped him out. That makes sense.

Aww, Walls ^^ That was a sad one, I agree. Such a huge misunderstanding for them both. AT least they got to have that bliss in the end though.
Actually in Light, Prowl ruminates a bit about how flawed Cybertronians who survived the scrapyard would flee and live in colonies away from everyone else. And by flaw I mean something that a little surgery couldn't correct, like scratched optic glass or something. So it's possible Prowl lived with the flawed for awhile and decided to make a life for himself amidst the 'erfect'.

It's so hard to convey the profound things I felt when I first saw this with 'My Little Transformers' playing in the background now (groaning at the sick, twistedness). I'm sorry--ANY way--Prowl is a wonderful char to begin with, regardless of how beautiful he is. This strikes me as a very soulful piece. Then again, this version of Prowl IS to begin with. Given the nanotech TFs are capable of, you did with the visor tech; I wouldn't expect it to be like what seems like sloppy old human connects I used to work with.
I swear, I had so much more interesting fare to say, but watching little ponies decimate marshmallow peeps at the feet of their easter god, Unicron, just sucked it all...

Easter god....*Dies laughing* Oh dear, that's a funny image! XD!!!
I wanted a Prowl that's distinctive. Like you read it or see him and you know I did it. Plus the whole blindness thing is as much a metaphor as it is literal. HIs blindness made Jazz blind to his flaws and there were instances where he just couldn't see the love right in front of him. And the intent was literally he could not see and figuratively, where he questions it. It's sorta related to my feelings and what's been going on.
And I delivered "The Letter" to Jason today too

I'll comment on the story tommorow when the kids are in school and I won't have 'My Little Transformers' blaring in the background -- its FUNNY, but not over, and over and over and over--I'm a tad -- sick of it...

It takes practice---lots, and lots and lots and lots of practice. I figure I'll probably have this all down and stop threatening to send them back to the Onelight--ohhhh--by the time I die. Maybe. Right now, I just remember that when I get really pissed, I can be sent to prison for sending them to Osama Bin Laden for cruel and unusual punishment against the guy.

Hehe! It's just a little slot with pins sticking out.
And their ports/jack plugs...well, just look at where your headphones plug into your Ipod/walkman and that's about how they look(though the port does have to pop out a little, so it's not like Prowl is just taking it like a girl, he isn't).
