The spirit ball is the basic form of any spirit, demon, ghost, or ghoul, spirit balls are formed when the spirit loses control of they're physical body, or is unable to retain a more human form.
This in particular is the rag-ghoul spirit ball, but they come in many forms, the rag-ghoul, being a ghoul, has more control over the appearance of it's spirit ball form, and generally choose to make it's center more visible, however in doing so it shortens it's life span dramatically.
Many spirit balls choose to remain transparent, in hopes of holding on to their life for a bit longer.
If you look behind the spirit ball you can see the vapor rising, this is it's soul, the spirit ball's soul always is leaking out, some take months, while others take centuries, the spirit ball is the last form of the soul, when it is gone, they face neither heaven or hell, they cease to exist.
It is said that a hidden group travels around the world purifying spirit balls in order to send them to heaven.
