Description This is a cartoon that has sparked a lot of attention on the internet over the years. It's basically a French political cartoon depicted on how parents deal with their kid's bad grades over the decades. There have been some parodies of this cartoon and some alternate versions, obscure, but this one is the one that has gotten the most attention on the internet.
It's called "C'est Quoi Ces Notes?" which is apparently French for "Explain These Grades!" It was created by French visual artist Emmanuel Chaunu.
The first panel is set in the 1960s, in a classroom, where two angry parents are yelling at their son for failing his grades. The boy is fat, miserable and sheepish. In the second panel, it's set in 2009, in a classroom, where two parents are literally LIVID at the teacher because of their son's tanking grades. The boy is thin and has a smug look on his face with his arms crossed, believing he's off scot-free.
You see, things are obviously a lot different then and now with the topic of grades in school. Back in the 20th century, parents believed that their children weren't always meant to be spoiled lazy and that they will always have responsibilities, while in t he 21st century, certain parents are often apathetic and indifferent, and they believe that their child is perfect and deserves a good grade in school no matter the cost. The way the parents are handling their kid in panel two, that boy is bound to have a pretty awful future, because this kind of parenting isn't quite clear on the concept of growing up. Parents claim their children are perfect and fail-safe, when they're really just lazy and insignificant, and always depending on their parents to get them out of trouble, which often leads to a poor adulthood. It's clearly like Veruca Salt on so many levels. So, in a way, this particular cartoon relates to today's lifestyle in kids, teenagers, and young adults very much so.
On various Reddit posts, this cartoon has a somewhat controversial atmosphere to it. What's so controversial about this? Maybe it's because it's quite accurate to modern-day society, that's probably why. And some Reddit users have been theorizing that the chubby shy boy getting yelled at by his parents about his grades in panel one is most likely the father of the spoiled boy in panel two. Is that right? You be the judge.
