"Ella?" My eyes flitted open upon hearing his soft voice. I looked over to where I heard him say my name, focusing on the blond and smiling.

"Hey." I greeted sleepily. I was never a morning person- and it wasn't even morning. Well, okay, maybe it's early morning. I don't know. "What's up? Shouldn't you be asleep, hun?" I lightly fluffed his hair, since he was nearby.

"Can't." He said, returning the smile just about as tiredly as I'd spoken.

"Sounds more like 'don't want to'." I giggled.

These days… Even when seeped with darkness, they're still the days I want to protect-

He smiled in that expression of 'was it really that obvious?' and rested his head on my shoulder.

"I'm glad that you're at least somewhat alright. I missed you." I said, putting my right hand around his waist, pulling him closer slightly. He smiled, showing evidence that he was trying not to nod off.
I chuckled. "Stubbornly fighting off slumber, but for what, may I ask? You do know that it's really okay, right? I don't mind."

"It's still-"

"If you dare give me that 'it's unfair to you' bull crap, I'll- okay, I don't know what I'll do, but it won't be all that good." I said with a laugh.

I love them more than anything. I can't simply stand by and watch them leave me, I won't let them-

He laughed weakly. "Okay… I won't."

I stroked his hair with my left hand and gradually traced down the side of his face, sliding down his arm and coming to rest on his hand.

"Did you want to tell me something?" I asked. He lifted his head to give me a questioning expression. "You woke me up?"

"Oh."

"So…" I pressed.

I'll protect them. I can't do anything less than that. I can't let them suffer because I- Because I-

"I love you." Those three words still manage to make my heart beat faster every time he says them.

I smiled at him softly, leaning down a little so our noses touched.

"I love you too, Cloud." I said, then gently kissing him on the lips. He smiled, finally shutting his eyes, and resting his head on my shoulder as we both drifted off to much needed sleep.

I care. I love them. That's all there is to it. It's as simple as that. I love them.
