Description
Revisiting the concentrically layered spherical cake because I keep getting asked about how to make it to a degree of regularity that is testing my sanity. The first cake, despite the reception, was fairly botched, so I wanted to perfect the technique before sharing it. Most people were pretty okay with that, others were a bit ruder in response and I got tired of dealing with it. So ta da! Here we go for round 2. This one turned out perfect so there will be a tute later in the week.Went for a whole sphere this time, essentially to show how easily it can be done. I mulled over how to decorated it for ages. I almost went for a pokΓ©ball cake, but I couldn't resist doing another planet. It was hard to pick a favourite, but Jupiter has so much charisma with its turbulent atmosphere I couldn't not choose it. I'm in love with the Great Red Spot so it was a given.
The cake begins with a mud cake core, surrounded by almond butter cake in turn surrounded by vanilla Madiera sponge. It's then crumb coated with buttercream and covered in marshmallow fondant. I achieved the detailing by painting the fondant with a dry brush technique using edible ink. Once I achieved the base colours I started removing some of it to create the storms, then added in some of the finer details. The painting took 8 hours all up, the baking of the cake was a process of a couple of days mostly due to the lengthy baking times, cooling times and the fact I was 300 times slower trying to document all the steps for a future tute.

This is absolutely amazing!!! You put so much time and effort into your cakes, that it's absolutely astounding
Quick question though: Whenever you're covering the cake with fondant, do you have a seam to smooth out or do you just put a single fondant sheet over the entire thing? Just curious.Β

I usually have no seam, but I do for large spherical cakes. To get a sphere covered with no seam you have to keep the fondant thick and that's just not my style. I keep the fondant as thin as possible. If you work the fondant enough you can disguise the seam pretty well (e.g. there's a seam just to the left of the large storm).

Holy freaking cow that is amazing. What a beautiful, and probably delicious, work of art.
What kind/brand of edible ink do you use?

I spent quite a lot of time painting it trying to get it right! That storm is one of my favourite things in the whole solar system so I really wanted try to do it justice.

Definitely. I've had the idea to make small spherical cakes into all the various pokΓ©balls for quite some time but it's a matter of time to get around to it. Next I'm making a deku scrub cake, then I need to make a bird cake or two for Losing Altitude. Then I plan to makeΒ a dragon egg cake, a GoT dragon cake and then a Smaug cake, and I still haven't finished my Majora's mask cupcake set yet. So it will happen, just not any time soon!

Wow.
You are again, incredible. From the first view in the thumbnail I thought perhaps the larger photo was just a top view, I didn't think it was possible to make a spherical cake! I can't even begin to fathom how you would actually make such a cake, so I will eagerly await your tutorial!
Totally love the effect of the background lights, very clever!

Spherical cakes are relatively easy, though you don't see them often! They're much more difficult to cover in fondant, but the baking is straight forward.Β
