Description Scene 1

October 31st, 1967

It was a misty moonlit night. Douglas had to take a midnight goods train to a goods yard on the northern coast of the island on the far side of the mountain, Cruach Sudria. He was delivering supplies of coal for steam powered ships and machinery.

The journey was long and difficult being single track most of the way with the odd passing loop for trains. The railway line was old with rusted tracks and was used seldomly.

Donald and Douglas never knew about the line until now as Henry had previously been in charge of goods train on the line, but fish demand had increased keeping Henry busy with multiple fish deliveries from the Flying Kipper which only travelled nightly on the old line once every Thursday.

Douglas had to travel through a dense forest north west of Crosby Station. After leaving the forest the track travelled higher and deeper into the mountains. He had to climb a dangerous and steep mountain pass on the coast eventually reaching the summit.

Douglas saw the lights of the coastal town, Oldhaven flickering on the sea in the distance. The light beam from Oldhaven Lighthouse shimmered on the sea protecting steamships from the vicious rocks off the coast.

He reached the bottom of the incline passing through a mountainous valley thundering over the viaduct spanning the river. Douglas had to pass through Oldhaven Scrapyard to reach the goods yard.

The mist had blown in from the sea as Donald puffed down the single track between the scrapyard buildings. He could hear the pounding of machinery crushing and melting down steam engines in the foundry. Douglas shivered at the thought, but bravely surged on.
