In a true Hail Mary fashion, the knight begged for help from the Virgin Madonna of Nazaré, At the moment before catatrophe (as legend has it) the blessed Mary made the horse turn away just before hurtling over the abyss. To Roupinho it appeared to be a supernatural occurnce that saved his life. (Later some claimed it was the devil, disguised as a deer).
