From a young age I have been interested in design. At first, I looked primarily at physical, manufactured items until my range of interests increased. In particular, Photography. Learning the principles of design helps when it comes to making appealing pictures, it's one of the things that separates the boys from the adults. This is also applicable in almost every circumstance, even in places where it does seem like it, anything poorly designed is not going to work regardless of what it is. Having the mindset to be able to make an ordinary item extraordinary takes a special mindset, and I want in on it.
Design is everywhere, whether it's a manufactured item or something you can't see. There is always some form of design involved. Some designers make brilliant designs for objects as simple as pens. It has always amazed and interested me how someone can make something as ordinary as a ballpoint pen into something that looks out of this world. I would love to get on board with how these designers work and think. Making ordinary things into something extraordinary.
I have a lifelong interest in design. How something works together like a perfectly oiled machine. Dabbing in different areas of design is something I do regularly, whether it's something as simple as basic house plans, making a video game level or making a photo conveyed as a message. They all involve design in different ways. Some are functional designs, while others aren't functional in the usual sense, but affect a person’s emotions. This all requires design in one way or another, and I enjoy that.
During my two years at Don College I took a total of 4 classes based around design. One of which was a UTAS course, Object Design. The 3 others were Photography, Computer Graphics & Design, and Media Production. In Grade 10, one of my classes were about engineering designs.
My greatest achievement so far would have to be passing an Object Design course, that's what motivated me highly into the world of design. In close second is hiking for 3 days with blisters on my feet. It was painful but worthwhile. Knowing that I can power through tough situations is something I'm extremely proud of.
There are a few hobbies of mine. The main one is Photography, that was started when I saw a long exposure photo of glowsticks flowing down a river. I have a deep affinity for cars, I’ve had an interest in them my whole life thanks to my older brother and father. I would love to do motorsport but don’t have the pockets to do it, so I enjoy them as a spectator. Music is another massive hobby of mine. It sounds generic, but I listen to music basically everyday and I am constantly expanding my horizon on it, mostly underground metal bands.
After the course, at minimum, I aim to be a photographer who gets paid. Understanding Applied Design increases the likelihood of that happening. Having only been in a photo studio a few times, spending more time in one can only help me understand how they work and operate. Talking personally to professionals will also do this. I will better understand how they do business, what goes through their mind and how they work.
