Description
Throughout the dinner, it was as enjoyable as all the others. Mira ordered her usual ramen meal while Artison ate his entire beef stroganoff. With a constant smile on his face, he went through every detail of this dimension he had traveled to. Mira had requested to stay behind for this adventure when she felt distance was needed, for reasons unknown to him. But it was her request, and he obliged. Skies that were always in shades of purple and pink with clouds to match the hues. The stars were always sparkling even while the bright green sun shone down on the meadows of grass that were in shades of blue, green, and purple. And at the higher peaks of the region, purple-colored mountains penetrated the sky. He went into more specifics about the world, the weather, the ecosystem, and the wildlife he had encountered. And Mira hung onto every word, asking questions about all the discoveries that she missed out on.
“Tiz a fascinating world, perhaps one day we can return together,” he said after finishing the last bite of his meal.
“That would be wonderful” she responded, taking the last sip of her water the two departed from their table and walked along the bridges between spires. With no destination in mind, they walked side by side continuing their discussion until they settled at one of the more elevated platforms that looked out onto the city.
“It was an enjoyable experience, though…there was a time I had forgotten you weren’t there,” He said as he leaned against the balcony railing. “I was talking out loud about this flower that looked very similar to one I noticed at your home world, wasn’t until I looked up that I remembered…”. He trailed off from his sentence, keeping his slight smile but his ears did lower.
At that Mira’s exchanging smile slowly faded away as she looked at him, leaning over the railing next to him as he spoke. Though she was disappointed in herself for abandoning this exploration she was appreciative that her absence was missed by her dear friend.
The bright full moon shone down on the spires leaving a beautiful glow on them and the thick clouds that hid the ground below. As they both stood there next to one another it was relieving that the wolf was not in a rush to return home and continue his many projects. This was the moment she needed, it was the ideal time. As she stood there, she was silent for a long moment. The worries of his rejection along with her ethics being conflicted in this way had her nerves on edge. But thinking over the discussion with her friends, this was the only way to know for sure.
“Artison, there is something I need to tell you…” she began as she nervously moved her hair out from over her eyes.
“What is it?” he turned his head, his bright eyes meeting hers as they stood beside one another.
In the moment the words left her mouth she was nearly tempted to steer the conversation elsewhere, abandon this attempt, and continue to some other topic. But she knew well what would come if she did not try to settle this here and now. Mira let out a soft sigh as she held her hands on the railing, twiddling her fingers together as she remembered his sister’s advice. She straightened her back and turned her body to face him.
“Artison, I’m in love with you” she finally said.
As the last word left her lips the pyreheart stood up straight as well, his ears up and attentive with a look of utter surprise on his face. It was rather difficult to determine if his silence was due to his lack of understanding or being caught off guard by a woman saying this to him. Mira’s cheeks were burning with blush at her confession and when the silence seemed to be long enough, she continued, hoping what came next would help him fully understand.
“Artison I…I don’t mean to stay away from home so often, It has just been hard for me. I thought I understood how I could get you to notice how I felt but I see now, your customs are different from the ones I grew up on…” She took a brief pause to see if his reaction would change. Lowering his ears, his surprise reaction turned to one of shame at having to turn down this woman’s affection. But he did none of that, he just stood there with the same expression.
“I was raised to believe I had to wait until the right man chose me to be with him, express if I wanted to be his. But…after many failed attempts I feel now I just have to say it, as much as it is…shameful, for my people. I used my friendship with Tannis as a means to escape these conflicted emotions I was feeling after my advances went unnoticed and…I made this distance between us. And I see now that was wrong of me…” as she spoke her voice was starting to crack slightly from the tears, she was battling from forming in her eyes.
“And now, I just…want some closure and want to stop feeling this way. Arty, I have felt out of place ever since I arrived here, but when I’m with you, I always feel like I belong. I would not even be here if it were not for your actions, despite what you were told in the beginning to not interfere with my people. You gave me a life I always dreamed of having. It was hard to leave my home the way I did but I will always be grateful for what you have done. You are an amazing friend to me, but…I can not help myself but feel more for you. I love who you are Artison. Your passion for every little thing, your kind-hearted nature to those less fortunate, and even after all the hardships you have been through that delightful spirit never faded...” Her tears couldn’t be fought off any longer as some trickled down her cheek, clearly able to be seen until she wiped them away before continuing.
“I have felt this way for some time and I…never truly knew how to express it, I suppose I did not think something as simple as-” her words were interrupted by the Pyreheart’s warm hands placed on her shoulders. Looking back at his eyes she hadn’t noticed how much closer he stepped towards her while she dried her cheeks. She reads his face, looking for any signs of regret on what would be done next, a subtle rejection to give her the closure she had requested. But he did no such thing, and to her surprise, the wolf smiled at her. His grip on her shoulders gently tightened to pull her close, and soon his muzzle lowered forward to plant his warm lips on hers. In that moment she was taken aback by this, but the surprise was quickly replaced by the rush of excitement and relief. Melting into his embrace, she leaned deeper into the kiss they held for a long moment. A small peck that grew more passionate each second, one of his hands slithering up to the back of her head to keep her close, savoring the moment.
When they had no choice but to take a breath their foreheads rested against each other, their eyes locked as they both caught their breath. Staring deeply into each other's eyes, the wolf wrapped his arms around her to keep her in his embrace.
“My dear, Mira...I will never forget this moment” He said as his chin rested on top of her head.
The anxiety and stress washed away from Mira in mere seconds, and she had never felt more relieved in her life. Her head rested against his chest, feeling his natural warmth around her.
“You love me too?” she spoke softly as some tears escaped her once again.
“I do…I had these feelings when you were away from me, I didn’t understand at the time. But doing all that I normally do before I met you, it wasn’t the same…Like something was missing” His embrace had gotten tighter as he spoke. “You delight me in ways I only now understand…” As he finished, he moved his hands back down to her shoulders and stepped back. Looking deep into her eyes as he leaned over slightly to meet her gaze.
“You choose me, Mira?...” as this young man spoke, he also looked to be on the brink of tears with a slight crack in his voice.
Mira reached her hands up to gently place each to his cheeks, her thumb wiping away one of the tears that briefly fell from his eye.
“Yes, Arty…I want you” She smiled at him as she responded.
“I never would have thought…” His arms lowered from her shoulders and fell down her arms until he took her hands in his. The two returned to their spot on the balcony and rested against the railing. Mira’s arms wrapped around his, resting her head against his shoulder. The two looked out to the kingdom they both called home, their tails coiling around one another.
