Description
Name: Modu (singular), Moduos (plural)Anatomy: Moduos are powerful mammals characterized by their large size, long claws, pillar like legs, stumpy tail, and most notably, their thick, shaggy fur. Underneath their fur lie rows of spines used for both defense and detecting vibrations within a short range. They lack eyes but more than make up for it with large nostrils that give them an incredible sense of smell. Moduos have large muscular jaws easily capable crushing bones hidden under their fur. Modu south of the Silver mountain range tend to be black or brown in color while the ones up north are white.
Size: 15-19 ft (4.5 - 5.7 m) in height
Diet: Moduos are omnivorous and will eat anything to sate their monstrous appetite, though meat is preferred. Insects, fish, grass, fruits, berries, rotting carcasses, carnivorous plants, smaller or weaker modu, other large carnivores such as fernions and volgars if they're strong enough, and even beblune are all on the menu for moduos
Geographical location: Blackacre, Grimllyn Wood, Mistmarsh, Frozen Crown
Habitat: South to the Silver mountain range they live in forests, north of the mountains they make dens out of ice and snow
Predators: As cubs they're preyed upon by carnivorous plants, fernions, volgars, gelibestias, frostfangs, and other modu. As adults, the only predator they have are other modu.
Behavior: Moduos are solitary beasts that violently defend their territories from other moduos, sometimes even fighting to the death for it. Depending on the location they're native to, Moduos have a few differing methods in marking territories. Southern modu mark their territories by clawing at trees or scratching them up by rubbing their spines against them, while the northern modu simply leave scent trails via glands on their feet and urine. While the process of marking territories may be different depending on locations, how they ward off rivals from their turf remain the same between the southern and northern variants and has become sort of a defining characteristic for the species. To keep potential rivals away from their territories, Moduos let out ghastly shrieks and howls that can be heard for miles. Before it was discovered that they were the ones responsible for the vocalizations it was thought that the shrieks were from ghosts or spirits (of course nowadays ghosts would probably be more preferred as they most likely wouldn't eat you alive). The only time moduos tolerate the presence of another modu is either when food is very plentiful or when the other is their mate. During mating season the males must prove their worth to the females through fighting, if the male wins then he will earn a mate for life, if he loses then he will either be chased off or eaten. Moduos will only ever have one mate at any given time, only finding a new one should the other die. Mated pairs will stay together until the cubs are born, after which they will go their separate ways until the next mating season. One to three cubs are born per litter and are cared for by the mother for about 6 months, after which the cubs will be left to fend for themselves. A modu's mood can generally be shown by the position of their spines, when relaxed their spines are flattened and hidden away underneath their fur, when hunting they raise them slightly above their fur in order to aid in tracking down a potential meal, and when angered or in a confrontation they will fully extend their spines to deter any attacks. Lost spines are not easily replaced and could take up to a year to grow a new one. Attempts at taming moduos, either as adults or cubs, have yielded....mixed results. The majority of cases usually lead to the modu either eating or severely injuring their masters, however there are rare instances beblune apparently taming moduos successfully. When tamed they are said to be somewhat tolerant of beblune and even fairly affectionate towards their tamers, usually showing it through play wrestling and gently chewing their caretaker's arms or tails. So while it is possible to tame one, it's still highly discouraged to do so as they're still considered very dangerous, even when tamed, and they will gladly make a meal of a beblune if the opportunity ever presents itself.
