Mirabel coughed up the first leaf at the age of nine. She was brought to her knees and gasping for air in a terrible fit. Something was caught in the back of her throat, scratching at her uvula and blocking her airways. When she finally managed to spit it up, there it sat: a small, round leaf with jagged edges. Mirabel was puzzled at how her body could cough up a leaf. Did she accidentally swallow one? No one else really seemed to care though, and soon neither did she. Tía Pepa announced that she was pregnant on the same day. Oh, she was so excited! She was going to have a new primo!
