Illustration to my headcanon about why Thranduil decided to stay in Middle-earth and eventually became Dark Thranduil .

Thranduil of course knew the story of Beren and Lúthien and believed in mercy of Valar. So when he realized he loved Thorin for real, he came up with the plan that relied on Valar mercy. And even after dragon attack, conflict between love and king's duty and consequent breaking up with Thorin did not change his mind.
After the Battle of the Five Armies, when Thorin was dying, Thranduil managed to say 'Wait for me there on the other side, I will appeal to the Ruler of the Dead and we will be together for the rest of times'. Thorin promised to wait.
After Thorin died, Thranduil secretly visited the ruins of Dale, found the quiet place and sent his spirit to the Halls of Mandos.
