Alright, basic character design sketches for all the incarnations of Tails in COA, both “A Chosen One” (Book 1) and “New World Order” (Book 2) as well as the “Through Fire and Shadow” comic which is part of the same continuity. As a summary of the different versions in (close to) chronological order:

Pre-COA Tails
This version occurs in the occasional flashback or memory sequence throughout the three books. In this specific case, this is also known as “Station Square Arc” Tails. Between the ages of 10 and 12, Tails – along with Sonic and a few others – moved to the area around Station Square. This parallels much of Sonic X, but is largely undocumented in COA. It is well known that during this time Tails began to work closely with GUN, and also earned an honorary degree in Chaos Mechanics from the University of Station Square. It was here that he also began to develop a “Pro-human” reformist bias and a belief in more aggressive action against Eggman forces. Drawn much like normal, but a little taller.

TFS Prequel Tails
The character design used for the Through Fire and Shadow comic, this was Tails shortly after his return to Knothole from Station Square and Overland. It was during this period that he began wide scale development of Mass Production Model Cyclone War Machines, encouraged reforms within the Freedom Fighters and Mobian Armed Forces regarding weapons and doctrine, rebuilt the Fiona Mk. 2 Android, and began to establish other bases overseas. Militaristic and eager to put his GUN-inspired theories to the test, he also leads the expedition to retake Downunda from the Black Arms and Combot Legion. Typically drawn armed with various firearms.

COA:ACO Tails
Tails circa the events of the first fanfic. He is just beginning his kitsune Rut, and has become somewhat disillusioned with his failures over the last year, especially regarding the Downunda Affair. He begins to show a renewed interest in using Doomsday weapons to win the war. Has something of a hero complex regarding Sonic and Sally, wondering why, despite his best efforts, he can’t be more of a people’s hero like they are. His hunger for belonging and a people like himself causes him to accept even the more caustic natures of the kitsune when Tempest tracks him down and tell him of their survivalist philosophy and culture. Drawn slightly “furrier” than other versions.

COA Alt Timeline Tails
This incarnation is Miles Se’Prower as raised by his kitsune parents, especially his father. Being older than normal and raised by his people, with their diet and training regimen, he is larger than the other incarnations of himself in the normal timeline. Becomes Ephor Anthal of the Kitsune Clans at the age of sixteen, and leads them to sack the Kingdom of Acorn… ostensibly as retaliation for the bioweapon that wiped out the humans. His actions in turn prompt a group of Mobians to go back in time, using the forbidden Time Stones, to try and kill him in the past and save one Julian Kintobor, who they believe will save the Kingdom. They kill Tails’ parents in the normal timeline, saving the life of the man who will become Robotnick, and strand him alone in the southlands as a child.

COA:NWO Future Tails
This is the version that sent Lara-Su back in time and strands her there. Since an identical, but older, Lara-Su is the woman who leads her younger self to him in the first place, it is likely that this is done to fulfill a self-fulfilling time loop. Lara-Su thus goes on to become his “First Templar” and the first person to be given one of Tails’ new set of Chaos Emeralds. This version seems to have more Merlin-like traits, both in appearance and mannerisms. He still seems to be missing his left eye, or at least maintains that look for cosmetic purposes.

COA:NWO Tails
Also known as the “fake body.” Having split from his Chaos Emeralds, and after being torn apart in Helios’ Eclipse Chamber, the only natural part of his body that remains is his right eye. After being “held” by Merlin for a time, he is then allowed to reconstitute a mostly inorganic body. This form is incredibly resilient and can construct devices out of itself, fed by Tails mechanical and electrical genius. Is notably capable of self-generating power rings to a variety of effects, or using chaos-powered weaponry (in NWO he custom fabricates ammo for his 20mm handgun every time it fires). Typically drawn with a “smooth” or not very furry appearance, in contrast with his ACO incarnation, and because his body isn’t real “flesh and blood” (Tails at this point still lacks the biological expertise to make a real body for himself).

COA:NWO Clone
This is the first (and only) drawing of the clone produced by Mya Florentine in NWO from the blood sample taken during ACO. He appears for a single scene, killing the entire heavily armed mobian crew of the Nor’easter as a political favor for his Master, Dr. Florentine. He seems to be completely ruthless towards Mobians, but respectful towards human authorities. Fights almost exclusively with his tails, using them as slicing and piercing blades, with a fine degree of Chaos Control. Drawn wearing a sinister looking full uniform, since he would probably have human sensibilities regarding “nudity.”
