this reminds me of how gardenia ( the second gym leader of diamond ) killed off my entire team with the exeption of my starter pokemon

awe, poor pound D8 he served you so well! As a rule of thumb, i always make sure my pokemon are five levels ahead of the first gym and then i train each of them 5 levels up for each gym after that. That way I'm always ahead
