Folk who live on the outskirts of the swamp know the waters are darkened with more than just the typical murk and scum. The twisted trees and giant ferns had been touched by a great evil in times long since forgotten. One of the most prevalent signs of this evil are the diminutive creatures known as Scamps. While not the most powerful of the swamp's denizens, Scamps are nonetheless capable of striking fear into the hearts of those who look upon them. They are no bigger than a large rat, and covered in matted, brown fur reminiscent of one. Their face, however, resembles a fanged bullfrog's more than anything. The creatures are known to gather in great numbers at sundown, when their dreadful croaks and shrieks can be heard echoing among the trees.

The most common stories surrounding the scamps all involve children disappearing in some way. In one village, it is whispered among the children themselves that the little nightmares delight in eating sleeping flesh and refuse to leave a window unblocked come nightfall. Elsewhere, it is claimed disobedient kids are stolen away by some forgotten power and transformed into scamps. The few arcane researchers that have taken an interest in the region claim they are nothing more than unfortunate after-effects of some forgotten magical catastrophe.
