Just as Nora was finishing up wrapping Astro’s legs with his blue travel boots, she heard the familiar sound of Matthew’s heavy steps coming into the barn. He let out a sigh as his figure appeared at the stall door. Astro snorted and laid his ears back as he turned to look at Nora still strapping his back legs. It was known around the barn that Astro was one friendly if his owner was around. If you approached the stallion while he was alone, he would try to get as far away with his rump turned towards you. Alex had tried to ride him once without Nora and it resulted in him landing on his butt in the pasture. He could be haltered and led around just fine by someone else, but he had an attitude the whole time. Ears pinned and stomping if he started to grow impatient. Luckily, Nora was usually around and handled the stallion with ease. Matthew blamed it on Nora spending so much time with him when he was a colt. Constantly spoiling him and being the only rider he had been under since his breaking in. Isaac had only recently been the other person he didn’t pin his ears as.
Matthew held out a piece of carrot for the stallion who clearly only liked Nora. Astro sniffed it before taking it, ears still pinned.
“One day, I’ll get to ride you. Bet on it Astro.” Matthew teased as the stallion snorted and dropped his head. Finding the hay in his stall more entertaining than Matthew’s presence.
“For maybe 8 seconds before he throws you. Maybe not even that long. You do remember what happened to Alex right? Granted he made the girth a little too tight. Didn’t he, my sweet boy?” Nora teased as she walked back up to the stall door to greet Matthew. Astro tossed his head up and Nora giggled. Matthew only rolled his eyes at the antics.
“Of course, he groaned about it for two weeks. Don’t you think he should get used to other riders on his back?” Matthew questioned as Nora pondered it, looking to her black stallion who shook out his mane and snorted.
“He says no. So no.” Nora smiled as she stepped out of the stall to let the stallion have some space before loading in the trailer. Locking it tight as she turned around to grab her backpack that was in the tack room. His saddle and bridle already hanging on the end ready to go.
“Fine….” Matthew sighed as he placed his hands on his hips and looked to the stallion again.
“I know you didn’t come in here just to bother Astro, so what’s up boss?” Nora asked, starting to pack up her grooming back on Astro. Matthew let out a chuckle as he leaned against Optimus’ stall door. Matthew thought putting the perfectly behaved Optimus across from Astro, would teach him some manners. They frequently went out in the same pasture together, but Optimus has yet to rub off on the younger stallion.
“Are you sure taking him to this show is a good idea? The FEI championship is less than two weeks away. And I know you both are looking forward to that show.” Matthew asked, trying to be the responsible older brother to all of his riders.
“Matt, the show is literally an hour away from here. It’s basically in our backyard. Not to mention it’s a great last-minute prep show for FEI. Astro has never misbehaved at a show or got injured. And this will be his last show for FEI. Period.” Nora explained, already itching to head to the show soon.
“Okay. As long as you promise that it’s the last. FEI is a big deal and I would hate to see you miss the chance to ride in it. We are all looking forward to the championship.” Matthew added on and Nora nodded.
“I promise. We’ll be back before the sunsets and then we will be 100% focused on the FEI. I already ordered all of his gear and Isaac promised to help me clean up the trailer for it.” Nora added wanting Matthew to be assured of her promise. Astro picked his head up and watched as he chewed on some hay.
“Alright. Take Isaac with you, just to help you out so you can focus on the show.” Matthew added on as he pulled another baby carrot out of his pocket and held it out to Astro, still trying to gain some of the stallion’s trust. Astro took it but pinned his ears until Nora walked up and fixed his forelock.
“His favorite treat is green apples. Maybe try those next time.” Nora teased as Matthew rolled his eyes before going to check on his chestnut stallion who happily ate up the leftover carrots in Matthew’s pockets.
