The Ulysses-Class Dreadnought was designed in 2269 fallowing the loss of the U.S.S. Ingram, but rather continue the transwarp drive experiment Starfleet decided to go with a standered warp drive. However many of the new designed technology was incorporated into the Ulysses-Class including a new bridge module and advanced impulse drive was included to complement the enhanced warp engines.Although the Ulysses could easily with stand a fire fight if the Romulan's retaliated after the Battle of Katrasi Prime, she saw more active rolls along the Neutral Zone patrol then space exploration.
