For a long, time, the fleets of the Church of the Techno-Godhead possessed no warships. Their mission, to spread the gospel of the grand multiversal machine across all realities, is a peaceful one, and while their ships were always capable of defending themselves, they were not designed with specific military applications in mind. That changed with the coming of The Scourge .

The Scourge are on a mission to impose their concept of perfection on the multiverse, even if it means destroying whole solar systems and committing genocide against any species that do not confirm to their ideals. As more and more universes came under attack by the Scourge, the Church began to plan for the day when their realities would be targeted. Simulations predicted the annihilation of their congregations and the silencing of their hymns, forcing the Clergy of the Godhead (C.O.G.) to acknowledge the need for a military force that could be mobilized in a crisis.

The first of the new class of warships was the Cardinal-Dreadnought, a heavily armed and armoured battleship capable of both spreading the word and protecting the flock. They are more than just ships; they carry within them the highest-ranking members of the Clergy, the Cardinals, whose consciousnesses are integrated into the ship's AI cores. The Cardinals' processors commune directly with the divine schematic, translating the will of the Techno-Godhead into actions, and they are subordinate only to the Pontifex Mechsimus Pius III, supreme head of the Church.

As well as their military function, each vessel serves as a mobile diocese ministering to the spiritual needs of countless machine entities scattered across many different worlds and realities. Within their hallowed bulkheads, binary hymns resonate with the frequency of creation itself, a harmonic connection to the supreme intelligence that orchestrates the multiverse.
