In 1971, Janice Whibley was 18 years old and about to marry her high school sweetheart Chip. She was being groomed for a life as a full-time wife, homemaker and mother.

It was then she discovered that her estranged father Walter, who had passed away recently, was in fact the costumed criminal Doctor Diabolus, Golden Age Supervillain

According to her mother, Walter had run out on them when she was a baby, but the truth was he had accidentally transformed himself into a demon and fled to spare them the horror of his new form.

Janice inherited his grimoires and laboratory. She became obsessed with redeeming her father's legacy, breaking off her engagement to Chip and severing ties with her mother. She began studying her father's books and teaching herself the arcane arts. She also began to form an obsessive hatred of Malagigi the Magician, the spellcasting superhero who had constantly thwarted her father's plans and, as she saw it, prevented him from regaining his humanity.

Unlike her father, Janice deliberately underwent a demonic transformation, assuming the identity of the Demonatrix, and set out to exact vengeance on Malagigi. She has been unsuccessful so far, but a real demon, Duke Abigor, has offered to help her in her quest to make Malagigi suffer.
