25 Years Of Super Mario RPG
To mark this occasion, I'm starting a new series related to Super Smash Bros. SSBU Case files. Basically, I measure the pros & cons of a certain character getting into Smash, especially in Ultimate. And first up is Geno, the fan-favorite puppet from Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars.
Pros:
* Mii Costume - Geno received a Mii Costume in Smash 4. A noticeable trend is that Mii Costumes from Smash 4 had been turned into Playable Characters or Assist Trophies.
* Square-Enix - Squaresoft co-produced Geno's debut game, Super Mario RPG, with Nintendo, and while Squaresoft's partnership with Nintendo initially ended in a shocking turn of events that led to Final Fantasy 7 moving the franchise to Sony, They seem to be patching things up with Cloud Strife in Smash... and now Dragon Quest's Hero.
* Sakurai - According to an interview, Sakurai himself actually wanted Geno in Smash since the days of Brawl. Even though Sakurai wanted Geno in Brawl & A remixed version or "Beware the Forest's Mushroom" was found in Brawl's game files, he didn't make it in... which is assumed to be the result of legal issues with Square-Enix. Still, Even though Geno is an older character, Smash keeps getting loads of votes & requests to put him in the game.
Cons:
* Mii Costume - After a while of absence from Ultimate, the Geno costume returned with the update adding Sephiroth on December 22nd, 2020. Some fans think that this automatically deconfirms Geno as a DLC character... but there's NO way I'm counting him out just yet as the alleged Mii Costume rule is just one of a several "unwritten rules" that had had a pattern of being broken in Ultimate, especially with 3 spirits so far from the base game (Min Min, Pyra, & Mythra) becoming DLC Fighters.
* Square-Enix - Unfortunately, the base game of Ultimate had only Cloud, Midgar, & a pair of songs... and literally nothing else. Alleged to be a tight-fisted refusal by Square-Enix to outsource anything except for these specific things, but Sakurai has since gone on record saying that the lack of songs from Final Fantasy in Ultimate's base game was the result of complications due to the copyright for most of the Final Fantasy VII music being split between multiple companies.
* Relevancy - So far, Geno's only true appearance outside Super Mario RPG was a cameo in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. But that hasn't stopped SMRPG from being re-released on the Virtual Console, and certainly hasn't stopped fighters like King K. Rool from getting into Smash.
* Half-Mario Character - Assuming that Geno would even be considered a Mario Character (given that he's also Half-Square-Enix), the playable cast representing the Super Mario franchise in Ultimate is already considerably bloated, especially if you include characters representing spin-offs like Donkey Kong, Yoshi, & Wario.
