A preview of a pencil portrait I'm working on.Free cookies for everyone who can recognize the owner of this lovely eyeball.
I'm trying to make this portrait as realistic as possible. Every pore, every little line and shape was drawn with care, patience and devotion. And insanity.
People ask me a lot of "what's the use of drawing miniatures?" questions. Well, aside from them being fun to draw and look at, large scale graphite drawings seem to be so much easier to draw for instance!
2 hours of work so far. Mostly done with mechanical pencils:
2H 0.3mm - basic lineart H 0.3mm - selected shaded areas HB 0.3mm - strong outlines + iris H 0.5mm - basic shading B 0.5mm - mixing light with dark 3B 0.5mm - black partsFirst to guess the right answer to whom this eye belongs, gets a feature in my journal.
Answer has been guessed within 2 minutes by *isaeway 8DALSO
Might start a 3 week mini contest soon. Still pending. I have very little time on my hands, but I have something to celebrate!

perhaps not "what's the use of drawing miniatures" but moreso I'm asking, "What's the use of drawing portraits of people that look exactly like them, with no creativity on the side of the artist?" Not saying it's a waste of time, but I would never strive to make a perfect copy of something. It would defeat the purpose for me.

Good thing I'm not making copies then. Besides, I prefer to think of this as a practice and a challenge to see what I could do with a pencil and carry that knowledge with me for future ideas.
