Description
I fear the day I die -shudder, gasp, then rest.
I fear it, for all I see is me
surrounded by the sterile breath of
muted machines and bored walls
who've seen this dance before.
I leave behind no children -
no wide-eyed babes came crying
from this womb.
I see the life in me dwindle
as optimism gurgles down the drain.
As happiness pauses for breath,
glimpse sorrow in my soul -
not complete, not whole.
I'm a dollar short for the ticket
promising the adventure of a lifetime.
And all too soon, that chance
is gone.
I'm left with crumpled cash
clenched in hand -
bereft and barren.
