Description
Valerian dug through the snow looking for any ground grass beneath the icy layers of frozen snow. She pushed her face there in the snow when she spotted yellow, ignoring the bite of cold on her nose as she ate the withering grass. The bitter taste of it on her tongue was unappetizing but it starved off the hunger. She lifted her head looking at the stars that managed to peek through the clouds. She breathed out watching as the mist for her breath floated through the air. She sighed before turning to start digging around somewhere else.
As she was about to move she heard the crunch of snow, she froze looking around the area. Her body tensed as her ears swiveled looking for any sounds.
‘Maybe it was just snow falling from off a branch,’ she thought, trying to calm herself down.
Then she heard it again, much closer this time.
Her eyes widened as she started to run dodging between the barren trees. The crunch of snow followed her as she ran, the snow only slowing her down a little bit.
——
Starling yawned as Dionysus gently nudged her shoulder trying to get her to keep her to move forward. It was still too open for his liking.
“Just a little bit more and we can rest,” he said to his tired friend.
“Come on, I'm not fragile, I can handle it if something tries to attack us,” she said with a crooked grin as she held her head high.
Dionysus lightly nipped at her playfully. “You’re asleep on your feet, how are you going to do any fighting while you’re snoring away,” he joked, backing away out of her reach when she tried to nip him back.
As he turned back only to see Starling kicking out sending snow through the air only to smack him in the face. He shook his head to get rid of the snow and rubbed his leg against his face.
“That was playing dirty and you know it,” he huffed looking at the smirking mare.
“Oh don’t be such a foal,” she joked as she trotted back over to him.
They both tensed before bolting as they heard something crashing through the few barren trees in the area. It sounded fast and right on their tail. Starling turned wanting to see what was chasing them only to stop when she saw that it was a mare, who then crashed into her.
“Calm down,” she said, trying to calm the panicked mare. Speaking in stop words as she tried to stop the mare from rearing up.
She pushed her over in her panic, not calmed by her soft words. Starling hissed in pain as she felt a sharp pain run up her side from a rock hidden beneath the snow.
“Starling,” Dionysus called when he noticed she wasn’t by his side. He ran back towards the field pausing when he saw the pregnant mare down and another mare hovering close to her.
