This is an infographic I made for Cinema Blend detailing the 5 dream levels of Inception. If you haven't seen the movie yet, I recommend not reading this because it will probably spoil a great movie for you.I did the artwork and Cinema Blend's Josh Tyler did the text. This explanation is based on Cinema Blend's interpretation of the movie. Nobody is trying to tell you this is the definitive explanation of the movie, just our own. Please don't get upset if this doesn't fit with your thoughts on the movie, part of what makes Inception so great is that different people can leave with different thoughts and then go and discuss their theories after seeing the film. That's part of the fun.

Great interpretation, but actually Arthus does the opposite of freefall at the Hotel. He accelerates the elevator to simulate gravity, thus being able to give the Kick.

Level 5 and Limbo are different
(thats why he washed up on the beach of Limbo.. drowning lol)
It cuts off before Saito has a chance to shoot them both because the point is they never get out.. They get stuck in Limbo together
My interpretation anyway.

What I noticed that makes me think that Cobb was in limbo during the last scene was the fact that you didn't see him going home. He was randomly there. I think he's in his own limbo, one he has created himself...

Yeah I think he's in Limbo at the end. Nolan also cuts the scene where Saito picks up the gun abruptly, which makes me think that's where we're supposed to assume Cobb's not going to wake up.

But they say (during the Van level, when talking about the increased risk of the job due to the sedatives) that Cobb is the only one who's ever been to Limbo. He went to Limbo with Mal and forged the world, so that's the same thing as level 5, isn't it?

But it never mentions how to get out of limbo. Maybe it's by dying, but then when Mal stabs Cobb towards the end, why doesn't he die and get out?

I don't think she killed Cobb when she stabbed him. He dies later on by drowning in the car, that's why when he arrives in Limbo, he's washing up on the shore
And in order to get out of Limbo, you need to wake up naturally (I think?). Since the reason you'd end up there in the first place is because the sedative doesn't allow you to wake up once you die in the dream. Until it wears off. 'hopefully' you're brain isn't mush by then.

I don't think he ever 'got out' of Limbo. I think the crumbling world was Cobb's dream, which he was still in when his body died on the first level by drowning. The death sent him to Limbo where Saito was waiting.
This would be so much easier if I could draw it out

does anybody know here why in the beginng saito tells all that stuff to cobb and in the end cobb already knows what saito is going to say ? and why does cobb wake up again at the beach if he already is in the limbo ?

There were 6 levels. The level pictured in 5 is Cobb's subconscious and Limbo is where he washed up on shore which was also seen in the opening of the movie.

.......... wow, I never thought of that. So then it was Cobb's dream that they brought Fischer into to find him, but Cobb's subconscious (Mal) was keeping him. THAT MAKES SENSE.

Exactly, and in the time it took Cobb to die from the knife wound from Mal Saito had been aging in limbo because of the time... fastforward, so to speak.

It can't be, because to get into limbo, you have to die. both fischer and saito died. ariadne and cobb's didn't die though. and then mal stabbed cobb's which means he died in this 'fourth level' and went to limbo. limbo is a shared state, which is why cobb's ended up in saito's fortress. and saito had populated limbo for about 50 years.

My theory is that there was no 'fourth level'. It seemed to me that going any deeper than a third level would send anyone straight to limbo. I don't think he died when Mal stabbed him, he was just hurt. And Saito's fortress was on the same beach as the city that Cobb and Mal built so I'm pretty sure that he and Ariadne were in limbo at that point.
