Description
Illustration from the X-Men.

Rémy LeBeau (Gambit) was abandoned in Antarctica by the X-Men. He would have died had he not found the source of energy that kept him alive. This source of energy is Mary Purcell, a mutant who wishes to be joined with Rémy to procreate a child, thus finding a reason to her existence.

Inspired by No Doubt's song, Ex-girlfriend.

Gambit is one of my favorite X-Men. And not only because he is charming and gorgeous. I also loved the stories about I read about him when I was a teenager.

I also loved his entire first regular series (by Fabián Nicieza). Back then, his series had a reason to be read (unlike more recent ones, that are all style but offer nothing more than an over-stretched simple thief adventure with little repercussions). Unfortunately, the "fandom" had already switched to the instant gratification mode that, in my opinion, ruined some comics.

Fabián was great to let us see glimpses of his grand plan while also giving us very good, smaller "episodes" filled with movie-like adventure (the first issue, pencilled by Steve Skroce is a beauty to read). By the time the main arc reached its conclusion (in issue #24, and the real end of the series, notwithstanding issue #25), I cared about all the cast members, some of whom had their own changes and developments.

One of them was inherited from the parent X-Men book. That was the mysterious green energy that saved Rémy's life, but that also threatened to kill anyone who got too close to him. She ended up being a sad person who had "died" because of her mutant powers and could not find a reason to why this had happened to her. Until she met Gambit and prepared the act that would make her death matter, while she and Rémy transcended their existence and created an entirely new form of life.

This picture is a tribute to the work of Mr. Nicieza on that series.

It is also a good excuse to draw a shirtless Gambit. Enjoy.

Ex-girlfriend.

I kinda always knew I'd end up your ex-girlfriend.

I kinda always knew I'd end up your ex-girlfriend.
I hope I hold a special place with the rest of them.
And you know it makes me sick to be on that list
but I should have thought of that before we kissed.

You say you're gonna burn before you mellow;
I will be the one to burn you.
Why'd you have to go and pick me
when you knew that we were different, completely?

I'm another ex-girlfriend on your list
but I should have thought of that before we kissed.

Your wildness scares me,
so does your freedom.
You say you can't stand the restrictions.
I find myself trying to change you;
if you were meant to be my lover I wouldn't have to.

And I feel so mean, I feel in between
'cause I'm about to give you away
for someone else to take.
Am I making a mistake?
All the time that we spent
I kinda always knew I'd end up your ex-girl, friend.

We keep repeating mistakes for souvenirs
and we've been in between the days for years
and I know that when I see you I'm going to die.
I know I'm going to want you and you know why,
it's going to kill me to see you with the next girl
'cause I'm the most gorgeously jealous kind of ex-girl.

But I should have thought of that before we kissed.

I have no idea why I never commented on this.  The anatomy is very good, almost alluring.  Interesting, "tan-lines" on his hips.

I like how she is like this ghot of a person you cannot escape, as if she is a part of you.

Thanks, man. Rémy's anatomy should always be alluring. There's a reason a lot of people fall for him, in and out universe.

And she was definitely that in the comics. That is why I thought the song fit her.

Because of his looks or because you have an equally angry ex?

....well,...not exactly. More like an obsessed spirit ghost that you can't see. . . . I suppose. I dunno exactly. Just seems vaguely familiar.

Ah, a little more like her role in the picture itself...

I guess I have felt like that, too. In real life and might feel that way for Gambit if I saw him dressed like this.

Gotta say, it is. Even if I would prefer him all smooth, Gambit is sexy enough to know how to sell all that hair to me.

He said he will reevaluate, so there is still hope.

And I did like Diana when Pérez worked on her book, right after the Crisis. That is all I have read of her, though...

Thank you. I had not been completely satisfied with any of the Gambit pics I had drawn up til now. I think this one is good enough for what I wanted.

He is (was?) very good. He is well beyond his "mysterious" exterior. He is best around people who realize he is a poser and who actually share his secrets, so he can relax a little and be more him.

did he die?

Nope. He just had the bad luck of living in the X-Offices of the Marvel Bullpen post Chris Claremont (who does care about him AND continuity) and away from Peter David (who is just great). After that, he fell prey of the trends that reigned that editorial line.

Dark, darker, darkest.

A million books and not a single one caring what the other book is doing.

Stories that should be done in two issues are sold as big "sagas", stretching them to TPB length.

A monthly book of his own that had him steal an object of "great importance" (that is, no actual relevance to anything outside the word balloons in the same super stretched plot where it said it was a very important arcane object), with forced carefree feelings and an unfaithful Rémy, a few months after he had come to terms with his love for Rogue, just because unfaithful Rémy is cool (just as single, poor Spider-Man is "better" than married, family-raising Peter Parker).
