This helmet is spectacular!
If you don't mind me asking. Where did you buy the epoxy, clear cast resin, plaster, and fibreglass mat from, and how much did it cost?

The biggest difference between our helmets is that mine required 0 artistic talent

well I could say that everything that is handcrafted requires artistic talent. not everyone can do it. you deserve the credits.

No problem; just stating the obvious. Tell me, on a scale of 1 - 10, how durable is the helmet now with the fiber glass and epoxy?

well I can tell you that fibreglass and epoxy are used on boat hulls.

Yeah, forgot about that.. So I guess that's a 10, pretty sturdy for a prop helmet. Nice.

What kind of paints did you use to get such a worn out metal look? I'm having a hard time finding some decent paints and your work turned out beautifully!

cessie23 In reply to Chanzlyn [2012-05-07 18:33:11 +0000 UTC]
first I painted it all black, then I painted it silver using a large worn out brush. in a very random manner, make sure you only put a little silver paint , just brush it lightly until you think it looks nice. don't put too much effort making it look clean, it's supposed to look dirty. then you can put highlights and shades for a final touch(which I haven't done yet). It only took me 30 minutes for this part. any kind of paint will do actually, just make sure you put the right primer or the right type for whatever you're painting. or you can always finish it with a coat of clear cast resin so it won't weather easily and for an extra gloss.
oh, and you can also use water based paint for the final touch if you want it to look aged. just put a little brown and yellow and just wash it over the whole thing. the colors will seep to the lower edges and will give you a nice oxidized metal look
so the paint really doesn't matter, others also use white instead of silver but it takes more time.
hope you got what I said. and goodluck!
