My abs burned from fatigue, but I held off Annabeth. My hand fighting had popped off Annabeth’s headgear just as the second period ended. While one of the referee’s helped her put it back on, dad called me over to my bench.

Taking me by the shoulders, he looked straight into my eyes: “look Karli, I know Anna is your friend, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Anna’s headgear was back in place, and the referee beckoned me back into the circle.
Before he let me go, he simply said “no regrets.”
