Tutorial: Shape, Form, and WireframesArtist: Joe Chico

This quick video (and Joe's first video tutorial) introduces you to the incredibly useful but often overlooked technique of wire-framing, its benefits and tips on getting started.

So what is wire-framing?
In short, wire-framing means establishing basic structures and evolving them into more complex forms. Wire-frames are simple lines which define the structure of your drawing, laying its foundations and outlining it in three dimensions.

How does it work?
Wire-framing is done by laying out simple lines and using them as guides. By building upon these guiding lines, you add detail to your drawing and move on from basic structures to increasingly complex forms. This is extremely handy when working in perspective or building hard-surface models such as vehicles, weapons or even armor.

Who is wire-framing for?
Beginners and advanced artists alike can benefit from this technique. Sometimes, it is easy to get carried away with visions of your final drawing and its intricate details. Wire-framing helps you focus on the foundations and see it at its basic structural level. It’s a great reminder that anything can be built out of basic shapes!

How can I start using wire-framing?
A suggested approach is to practice the process backwards, taking reference pictures and breaking them down. Alternatively, you can start from scratch and build your own complex objects from wireframes. To avoid getting confused when going through the process, using color coded wire-frames is very useful.
It is a technique that takes some getting used to initially but can quickly become second nature – as well as being extremely fun!
