Women in the 19th century, especially in the southern United States, would wear far more clothing than was necessary for the weather because that was just the fashion. Getting "the vapors" refers to overheating, which was a serious risk at the time, what with the lack of air conditioning and such. (Ever lift your collar on a hot day and literally feel heat radiating out of your shirt? It's basically that.) The whole "hysterical lady" stereotype comes from women fainting from the heat due to getting an accelerated heart rate from stress.
