Euli did not enjoy the addition to her schedule of having to practice fighting, especially not with Diamond Unicorn. Though she could stand her ground for a long time in a fight, she really didn’t have much she could do. Miniature earthquakes might be helpful outside of the Crystal Caverns, but underground, surrounded by so much stone, Euli didn’t dare.
But it was frustrating - every fight with anything but a low powered youma, was so frustrating. Normal punches and kicks didn’t do much of anything, though they were better than nothing, and paired with her endurance, at least let her keep an opponent busy. (Or at least opponents who didn’t have weapons…or extra legs, in Diamond Unicorn’s case - getting kicked by diamond horse hooves hurt like a bitch).
It was also just a lot, on top of research, her work as a Teaching Assistant, and trying to keep Yulia in the dark. She’d finally started using her room in the Caverns, too, because some of the times she needed to practice were rather inconvenient for her schedule, and sometimes sleeping there was just…easier.
For the one that happened latest in the day for her, she actually went to the Crystal Caverns after dinner, settling in the library to work on grading tests for her first year physics students. Papers spread across the table, and though she had the answer key, she still had to check work, so she had a calculator for that as well.
It was hard to focus, though, knowing a session of yet more frustration awaited her in a few hours. What point was there to her practicing, when nothing improved? Sure she could punch and kick well, she had fantastic endurance she’d never had to work for… But what was the point of ‘training’ with Diamond Unicorn several times a week? For all the good it did, she might as well have gone and fought a normal human every week, and at least then she could have felt like she accomplished something. Estelle didn’t even have to use her powers against her - she only used one of her kicks when she got tired and was ready to move on to the next person.
Maybe the frustration wouldn’t have been so bad, if she’d been able to actually help that girl at the Opera House… No one knew what had happened to Mermaid after the Jokers had gotten her, but Euli doubted it was good. She had never liked or wanted this senshi thing, but she hated that she hadn’t been able to actually help the other woman. She’d bought minutes, which had been wasted. First available, least helpful…
Calico distracted her from her recriminations, tapping her shoulder. “Hey Euli, just letting you know we should head down to the training room.”
Euli sighed, piling the tests back together to stick in her backpack. “Great,” she said, devoid of enthusiasm.
“Come on,” Calico said, sympathetic. “We can make cookies when we nurse our bruises afterwards.”
“You’ll still have fewer than me,” Euli said, as she pulled her rock from her purse. After all, Sailor Angelite Calico Cat had a few more abilities than Sailor Boulder Opal Wombat. (Granted, Calico was also a lot more into this than she was - Euli had wondered before if her recalcitrance and skepticism was just making everything harder for her.
Calico had already transformed. Euli always put it off to the last second, but she transformed quickly, the only fanfare being a bright flash of light.
“Ooooo you look different,” Calico said, as she re-opened her eyes.
“…I do?”
“Yeah! We have a few minutes, let’s find someone’s room so you can see!” Brisa drew her along, stopping to knock at the nearest room she knew someone in. “Hi Arachne!” she said, as the door cracked open. “Can we borrow your mirror?”
“…sure?” Arachne had met Euli before at least, so she stepped aside.
Calico scooped up Venom as the pilik chirped at her. “Hi! I hope you haven’t gone on any kitty rides lately!” she said, as Euli went into Arachne’s bathroom to look in the mirror.
There wasn’t any gold present on her brooches anymore, it had all turned to stone. Fitting for Boulder Opal, she supposed. Another skirt layer poofed beneath the first, opalescent colors matching the stripe at the hem of the first, and gems dotted her bow. Looking down and pushing her stomach back in, she spotted her shoe brooches had undergone the same change as her others, and could see that the ends of her back bow had gotten an opal-colored stripe as well.
Shaking her head, she went back out. “Thank you, Arachne,” she said.
Arachne nodded, a bit unable to talk as a cat had climbed up her shoulder and was trying very determinedly to groom her hair.
Calico, giggling, helped get the cat back to the bed. “Thank you~” she said.
Halfway out the door, they heard a loud crack, and both girls looked back to see a geode cracking. Euli had given it to Arachne after her sister had absconded to America with it for a week of risk-taking selfies. Even before she’d known they turned into cute animals, she hadn’t wanted it near her sister, and so the geode had become Arachne’s.
Arachne quickly hurried to the sitting geode, and Euli had the vague idea that maybe it hatching had something to do with the change to her appearance. She didn’t seem to need them, though, so after a quick wave, the two hurried to teleport down to the training room.
“Maybe you’ll have new powers to help,” Calico murmured to her as they joined the small group of other girls who this session worked for, time-wise.
“Hello everyone,” Estelle said, already transformed and waiting. “How is your workload today, Eulalie?”
Euli sighed, though she appreciated that the (she assumed) older woman always asked. She had a lot on her plate, after all. “I have a test I’m still grading, for my first year physics students.”
“Then we’ll start with you, so you can get back to it,” she replied, beckoning Euli to join her in the ring for practice as she stepped in.
“Thanks.” Euli followed her, hoping that whatever this change entailed, it was something good…
As Estelle rounded on her standing several feet back, she felt a whisper of power. Following on it, she set herself, charging at Estelle with a sudden burst of power. Of course, Diamond Unicorn had her diamond shield out to take the hit quickly, but she was still surprised, and the force pushed her back to the wall. “Oh, you’ve gotten a new power,” she said, smiling.
“Guess so,” Euli said, quickly jumping to the side as Estelle began to push her back. She danced backwards before charging the shield again, feeling the impact through her whole body.
It felt to her like she could take down the shield if she repeated it a few more times, so she did. The time she needed to get back enough to charge was compensated for by making Diamond Unicorn turn to face her.
The cracking of the shield definitely felt like a victory, though even on her endurance, she felt she was flagging, and she didn’t want to do that again, instead beginning to pummel the shield as it fell apart, not quite noticing immediately as dirt and pebbles rained down to the floor from her punches.
Diamond Unicorn caught one of her fists in a crystalline hand, and Euli winced a little as she felt her skin cut. In response, her skin shimmered as she used the ability that Estelle had offered to the group she worked with. It made it easier to keep punching, especially as her opponent began to attack too, and she noticed Estelle was dodging her punches where before she used to catch them.
She was confused by that for a second too long, enabling the other woman to get back from her, and with a solid kick, Estelle knocked her back into the opalescent wall of the training cavern, knocking the wind out of her, even with the hardened skin. “Well… You are going to be… interesting from now on,” she said, catching her breath. “I’d recommend trying those punches out towards the face… If you can land it, you might throw your opponent off while they try to see.” She shook her crystalline hand out, which Euli noted had a slight crack running through it. “Brisa next, please,” she called.
Euli quickly vacated the floor as Brisa bounced in, taking a moment to sit down in a chair. “When will I get a power where I don’t bruise,” she muttered. Not that she wasn’t used to it… Estelle didn’t usually have to do much about her, but she usually did have to hit her with one of those extra hard kicks to wear her out faster.
Arachne, who had returned with a new pilik in tow now, glanced at her, and shrugged, as Venom and the new one batted a toy around with their ears. “You never know,” she said quietly.
The frustration was definitely less, now, as Euli headed to the kitchen, not feeling up to going back just yet. Maybe, if she didn’t have to feel useless in fights…maybe the rest of this could be…fun…?
