All chapters can be found on A03, but will also be posted on X, Tumblr, and DeviantArt. A story that takes place a year after the Krang invasion is stopped. Based on the Rise of TMNT TV series and Movie.Krang Prime shrieked and roared as he beat him into the ground, Leo didn’t fight back…he’d won. His world…his family was safe. And even still, those words haunted him…constantly ringing in his mind as the taste of iron filled his mouth.
“You…YOU RUINED EVERYTHING!!! And now…my wrath will be reserved for you alone. You think you’ve won…you WRETCHED…LITTLE…PEST!!!”
Leo felt the crushing weight of the Krang’s metal fists land on his plastron, feeling his insides squash, his bones shattered. It was painful…but he found comfort in the photo of his family that laid limp in his hand, worn and old from war. A tear fell from his eye, as he smiled through the pain, the anguish. Then…he heard a voice in the endless void.
“Leo…” the voice called again. He tried to ignore it, but the voice seemed to pull him from the abyss he surrendered himself to, the dread drowning out his thoughts, his life. It called to him again, echoing in his mind.
“Leo, wake up! Leo!” It got louder and louder, forcing him out of the trance he was in. Leo sees a green light coming towards him. That voice…was so familiar, calling to him. He tried to respond. “Gram Gram? Is that you?”
“You…are not…alone.”
“Gram Gram! Whoa!” Leo shouted as he was pulled towards the light. The closer he got, the more the voice changed. The light slowly faded from green, to gold. Emitting a soft warmth that Leo knew very well. He heard a desperate cry from the light.
“Leo! Wake up! Can you hear me? It’s Mikey!”
“Mikey?” Leo said with a confused expression on his face. He As he reached the light, his whole world changed. His eyes were closed, opening slowly. He was no longer in the Prison Dimension, but at home…in the lair, with Mikey standing over him, shaking Leo to wake him up.
“Leo, wake up! It’s just a bad dream! It’s okay!”
“Okay okay, I’m up, I’m up.” Leo sits up in bed and throws the covers off of himself before sitting with his head in his hands. “Ugh…man, what a nightmare…”
“Leo, are you okay? Was it the same nightmare? About the-”
“Yeah.” Leo interrupted. “Yeah it was…but this time…I swore I heard Gram Gram’s voice, calling to me.”
“Whoa! She did?” Mikey’s excitement grew at the mention of their grandmother, Hamato Karai. “What did she say?”
Leo rubbed his head as he looked at his little brother. “She said, ‘You are not alone.’ Why would she say that? I get it that’s kind of what our family is all about but, why now? Why randomly pop into my head and say our family mantra?”
Mikey scratched his chin, thinking about why their Gram Gram would do something like that. “Maybe…since you were having a nightmare, being back in the Prison Dimension…alone…maybe she wanted you to know that, even while you were trapped there, you weren’t alone. Maybe her spirit was there with you! Yeah…that’s gotta be it!”
Leo chuckled as he rubbed his baby brother’s head. “Maybe you’re right Miguel.” Leo’s smile slowly faded as he remembered what happened. “But still, it’s been a year. Why haven’t these nightmares gone away?! I’d rather keep my head screwed on straight thank you very much!”
Mikey rested his hand on Leo’s shoulder, trying his best to comfort him. “Leo, healing takes time. And out of all of us, you had it the worst. Just…don’t go and do anything stupid like that ever again! You hear me?”
Leo smiled as Mikey’s alter ego, Dr. Delicate Touch get the best of him, making Leo laugh. “Okay, little bro, I’ll try my best. But know this. If I had to trap myself with Krang Prime to save your butts all over again, I would. And you can’t stop me.”
“Then…then I will go and nearly destroy myself to get you back…again. And you can’t stop me either!” Mikey looked like he was about to have a fit.
“Trust me, with how I got my butt handed to me by that monster, I couldn’t stop you even if I wanted to. Now, is there a reason that you woke me up besides me thrashing about having a ‘horrific’ nightmare?” Leo asked with a smirk on his face, wondering if his brother had an ulterior motive.
Mikey smiled big, looking at his brother. “I…made breakfast. AND after a year, the pizza places are finally open for business! We can finally have Casey try pizza for the first time!”
Leo’s eyes grow big at the mention of pizza. “Seriously?! Man, I miss pizza…”
“I know, right?!” Mikey was practically jumping up and down from excitement. “It took them long enough. I mean…I guess the Krang did destroy New York, so…”
Leo stood up and crossed his arms, leaning on the wall of his subway car. “So, now that the city is officially rebuilt, we should give Casey the full tour along with Raph, Donnie, Dad, and April. How does that sound, little buddy?”
The gang took Casey on the town, giving him an all new experience for New York. The big apple had a long recovery experience after the Krang destroyed it. They showed him Central Park, Broadway, Ground Zero, Time Square, the Empire State Building, and even their favorite pizza place, The Guy’s Pizza. After they got a truckload of pizza, everyone made their way up top to the support columns of Brooklyn Bridge, for Casey to try his first ever slice of pizza. He took a slice, and looked at the group, confused.
“So this is, ‘grabbing a slice’? I don’t get it.” Mikey smiled as his eyes were fixed on Casey. “Wait for it…”
Casey hesitated, then took his first ever bite of pizza. His eyes go wide as the warm piece of heaven touched his tastebuds. “This is so much better than rats!”
Raph, Donnie and Mikey nodded approvingly, and Splinter looked rather shocked that Casey implicated that he ate rats. Leo rested one of his arms over Casey’s shoulders. “Hey, the rest of the world we saved is pretty great too.” Leo said with a wink.
“Alright everybody! Look up here!” They all look to April as she turns Splinter’s tail into a selfie stick as they take a group selfie. Casey looked at the picture, reminiscing about the photo his Sensei gave him, along with instructions to stop the Krang. His old family that died in the future, and his knew family, in the past. Same people, different time. Casey heard April’s phone beep with a message. Casey grabbed April and showed her the phone. “Hey, it looks like you got a message from someone named, Cassandra?”
April opens her phone, and looks at the message, flipping through photos. “Whoa! Looks like our friend Cassandra here’s been busy!” She shows Casey photos of Cassandra Jones fighting off Krang and flipping them off. Casey looks at the photos in complete shock.
“That’s my mom!” Everyone goes wide eyed as Casey declares that Cassandra is his mom. Donnie is especially surprised.
“There goes the space-time continuum!”
Raph looks around, and sees that Leo has snuck away from the group, and leaves to find him. He notices Leo, sitting alone, munching on a slice of pizza, looking rather melancholy as he stared into the sunset cityscape. Raph smiles with a pizza slice in hand, as he sits next to Leo.
“You did it, little brother! You really did it! I’m proud of you…” Leo looks at Raph, a little surprised, but swallows his pizza and smiles.
“This wasn’t about me. It was about all of us, doing what needed to be done. Because we’re heroes!” Raph started laughing, and Leo looked at him surprised and a little confused.
“You said heroes.” Raph said with sing song in his voice.
Leo remembered the game he made up a year ago, every time Raph said ‘heroes’, they took a bite of pizza. And now, here he was, saying the same thing. Leo smiled knowingly, and offered cheers to Raph with their slices of pizza. After finishing their pizza the whole group stood up, and looked at the sunset lighting up New York City.
“There it is, gentlemen. Our home. What a town.” Donnie says with a smile on his face.
“Beautiful.” Mikey sighed as he rested his arms on Splinter’s head.
“And if it needs defending, we’ll always rise to the challenge.” Leo said with a smile of confidence as he remembered how much they adore their beloved city.
Raph smirked, then looked down at Leo, coming up with an idea. “Speaking of which, you know what challenge I’m gonna rise too?” Raph surprised everyone by playfully pressing down Leo’s head. “Beating that record!”
Leo watched as everyone cheered, and hesitated to join the fun. “No way! Oh, okay fine!” Leo smiled, then ran off to enjoy the fun as Raph stacked 127 pizza boxes on his head. “Alright, big Raphie let’s do it!”
“Raph! Raph! Raph! Raph! Raph!”
