Description
The earthen bridge before them was narrow, dimly lit by the strange glowing crystals. The water below was dark, a barely discernable ripple disturbing the surface. Ari stared at the underground river, remembering the old saying, still water runs deep.
     "Well," Leilani said, sounding as eager to cross as he was, "go on." She motioned towards the bridge with one hand and put the other on his back. Maybe she was trying to give him a push?
     Ari sighed. "All right. Follow me..." He took a cautious step. The top of the bridge was sandy, his foot shifting just a bit. He looked back to the dark water for a moment, now certain he was going to end up in it before the day was over. Was that a shadow beneath the surface, or just his imagination?
     Shaking his head, he slowly made his way across. Leilani was right on his heels. Little bits of dirt slid off the side with each step, lightly dusting the river. Then, rocky bits of the bridge itself broke off.
     Plunk-plunk-plunk!
     Leilani grabbed his tunic with an inarticulate sound. They stood stock still, hearts thundering in their chests. Nothing moved in the cavern, the bridge remaining intact.
     Then, the giant catfish surfaced.
