Coruscant, also known as Imperial Center during the rule of the Galactic Empire, was an ecumenopolis—a city-covered planet, collectively known as Galactic City—in the Coruscant system of the Core Worlds. Noted for its cosmopolitan culture and towering skyscrapers, Coruscant's population consisted of approximately one trillion citizens hailing from a vast array of both humanoid and alien species. Though debated by historians, it was generally believed that Coruscant was the original homeworld of humanity. In addition, Coruscant's strategic location at the end of several major trade routes enabled it to grow in power and influence, causing the city-planet to surpass its early rivals and become the hub of galactic culture, education, finance, fine arts, politics and technology. It was the location of several major landmarks, including the Jedi Temple, Monument Plaza and the Senate Building.

During the Age of the Galactic Republic, the world had witnessed invasions and devastations by the Sith Empires of Naga Sadow, Exar Kun, the Sith Emperor and even by the Mandalorians at the time of the Republic's 1st Dark Age period.

In the final days of the Clone Wars, the world was even more devastated when the Confederacy of Indpendent Systems launched a daring strike to abduct Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine and while the attempt failed, millions were lost as a result. Years even before the Battle of Coruscant, the world was the background of a Kaiju battle between a Zillo Beast and Titanus-Godzilla, who was summoned there by Shinji Ikari due to seeing the Zillo Beast threatening the planet.

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, the planet was protected by an armada of well over tens of thousands of warships and a large number of legions. So fortified was the planet that the Rebel Alliance and later the New Republic had ruled out a possible invasion of the planet due to the heavy losses it will inflict.

The planet was ravaged by a civil war in the period following the Battle of Endor and right up to the Battle of Jakku which brought the Galactic Civil War to an end. It became the capital of a rump state yet true power of the Imperial Remnant was already transferred to Exegol, where the Final Order rose in secret as does it's proxy - the First Order.
