Chapter 5: Creation of the Promiseland
After the creation of the AAR territorial system in 2011, the economy of the ISA continued to explode all the way to 2015 and during these years of growth, Africans from all over the continent had swarmed the country in vast swarths, wishing to get a piece of the prosperity and escape oppression and starvation from their original countries. With a manifesto of brotherhood, many were accepted and began to be naturalized as Azanian civilians, even though the UN condemned their practice of refusing to accept refugees from Asia and the Middle East, with the Secretary-General of the UN stating that "The Azanians should either accept all refugees or accept non at all, which in effect would make them guilty of breaking international law". Even so, the Azanians didn't care, with the Azanian ambassador to Japan even stating that "the US and it's capitalist allies lost their voice in Azania the day they crucified and threatened us for liberating our people from poverty". Many had been shocked by these remarks, with the US President going so far as to call the Azanian government "arrogant and racist". These words weren't completely nonsense though. Since the day the APLP had taken over, minorities, particularly Indians and Whites, had been marginalized by the government, of whom removed them from all government and military positions, now no white or Indian person could be a judge or an official in the country's government. Only those working in civil services such a teaching, medicine etc. were spared from losing their jobs. Many viewed this as an injustice, and although there was no legislation that directly blocked them from having the jobs they lost, it was clear the APLP was targeting them as minorities, particularly white people. To make matters worse, they were being economically side-lined too, meaning they got very little to no benefit from the economic boom the country experienced. Ironically, the spawns of the people that had once despised and oppressed with cruelty the nation's natives, now found themselves working for them. It was humiliating. As a result of the marginalization many had left the country, but could not leave with their wealth due to APLP policies, those that stayed finally found the loop-hole they were looking for in 2011 after the Treaty of Adeapolis had been signed. Many Indians and Whites thus flooded the two AARs of the nation, leading to the nation's quick amendment of Azania's first law – The Interior Act of 2004, which would be used from mid-2012 in order to enforce policies that forced people living inside the ISA to obtain a 'multi-lateral visa' (a visa from the AAR the Azanian is going to, as well as another visa from the ISA Government permitting such a travel from taking place) when going to Lesotho or Swaziland. Although a lot of Indians and whites had escaped by then, a lot still remained behind, fearing greater economic hardships inside the AARs that were yet to be substantially developed by the ISA.
Meanwhile, the nation's black people were rapidly advancing, debunking racial theories and ideas held by a stunning majority of the whites that lived in the country. Many whites still regarded themselves as "South Africans", refusing to recognize the regime, which they considered evil. What made things worse for them as the 'volk' was that the racist bunch of them just couldn't bare seeing blacks successful whilst the prestige of being called "Baas" by them was ruthlessly ripped away. Plus, they felt robbed since they had lost massive amounts of wealth for the government's program to be a success. They had lost all the land their forefathers had gained during the colonial era, and even when the fruits of the True Transformation Act were finally being seen, they were still marginalized and given very little opportunity by the government, who claimed to be prioritizing "the previously disadvantaged in order to obtain substantive equality". To many, particularly white people, this justification was simply not enough, and was thus unacceptable. A lot of them preferred to leave for Australia and America, but a majority couldn't, as they lacked the funds to facilitate a trip to the shores of other countries. But there was still some creativity applied by those that were desperate to escape the ISA. Although the numbers of those who used this strategy was very small, some white South Africans had managed to board some of the hundreds of trade shipments between the ISA and its economic partners and associates, thus allowing many to be shipped as refugees elsewhere, with the lucky ones landing in Japan or the CRE, where they could apply for refuge. Ultimately, a majority of those that wanted to escape what they considered "Reverse Apartheid" fled to the AARs, and since the ISA had no extradition rights inside these Autonomous Administrative Regions, the government could not pursue them if they crossed successfully without being caught by the Azanian Secret Police.
Many whites were clearly unhappy about the new government. It was no secret that they were the direct targets of the oppressive side of the government's policies. As a result, by mid-July 2013, a string of riots had occurred all over the ISA. These riots were much stronger than the earlier ones, making it harder for the police force to crush them. If the Azanian government was careless, then the nation would become a warzone. Many of the rioters quickly turned into revolutionaries, with the old Rainbow South African flag (which was illegal to showcase) being flown high as the Whites called for unity and an end to APLP Totalitarianism. This "good initiative" however, was quickly ruined when the old Apartheid flag was also showcased during these riots with beliefs that the Apartheid national anthem (which could earn someone 50 years in prison) had also been sung. Although its unknown whether it was APLP spies masquerading as one of the rioters, many of the black Azanians who supported them no longer did, plus with the effectiveness of APLP propaganda, many were exceptionally angry, particularly when one black child – Sipho Ngubese, was found hung on a street poll in proximity to one of these riots. Many black Azanians instantly called for blood and the government finally had an excuse to get rid of white people. The Premier Supreme reacted to this incident by sending the new and more powerful Azanian Black Army. With a well outfitted army fighting against them, the revolutionaries and the rioters didn't stand a chance.
To the Premier Supreme, these riots represented a deliberate sabotage against what he called The Promiseland. To combat this, the Azanian leader would sign the Big Directive, a supreme decree stipulating the expulsion of all Whites and even Indians (whom he saw as an enemy due to the nation of India being at war with their Russian ally as well as his general outlook on most of them, viewing them as "Racist collaborationists who despised black people"), thus instantly stripping them off their citizenship. Most of these people would be exiled by the army to the North of Azania, leading to swarms of White and Indian people entering the countries of Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. As stipulated by the Directive, others were exiled to the sea, with little to no supplies, leading to many deaths before the USA, EU and Australia decided to intervene and send ships and boats to pick up these refugees. Even the UN and international NGOs provided help to those fleeing to the Madagascar by providing the shipping resources needed to take them to the island nation. The Azanian government did not intervene in the world's rescue efforts, in fact, the Premier Supreme didn't care where the exiled went, so long as they weren't inside the ISA. Which is exactly why he was exceptionally angry when he found out that a huge chunk of the exiled people had escaped into his two AARs, at first he wished to pursue them, but until the AARs declared the refugees as a threat to security, Azanian troops could not be sent, besides, world affairs had garnered the majority of the Premier Supreme's attention. With the world powers trying to prevent the beginning of WWIII, not much would be done to punish the Azanian government for its aggressive actions against its own people apart from ineffective sanctions and the forced repatriation of black students studying in Western countries. Meanwhile, the coloureds of the ISA also feared that what had happened to the Indian and White people, would also happen to them.
Although Coloured people had been spared from the ruthless evictions by the regime, as a result of those who had once exhibited racist hostility against blacks before the APLP got into power, the government would begin discussing the status of coloured people during the Adea-City Conference of September 11, 2013, held in Adeapolis (the new name for Johannesburg, the Azanian State Capital) in the Gauteng Province, where the government contemplated "the change in the racial classification of Coloured People". Fortunately for coloured people, they would dodge a bullet after it was decided in the same conference that the coloured population of the ISA should be "re-educated and assimilated instead of punished" according to Mashinini, as they had no native home apart from Africa. The general population of the ISA would thus mostly be made up of coloureds and blacks, a decision that was fiercely debated before being undertaken. Meanwhile, the Azanian Premier Supreme finally held the nation's first presidential elections after encouragement from their Superpower friend - the CRE. Finally completing the nation's political model of Maksymism by allowing the ISA to have a president just like in the now dissolved RCU. The new APLP leader – Kenyatta Khuzwayo, would be named the Head of Government after winning these elections. Although it resulted in Mashinini no longer being the leader of the party, the new Office of Presidency would not threaten the power of the Premier Supreme, of whom continued to rule as Head of State in the ISA. Even so, the amendment of the Azanian Constitution would ensure that the Premier Supreme shared his power with the government. Meanwhile, the economic boom continued well into WWIII, which was exactly what Mashinini needed in order to break international law yet again by sending Azanian troops into the AARs after an alleged distress about rioting White and Indian refugees. Although it would be found later during investigations conducted by AAR operatives that the distress was false, by then it was too late, and the army had invaded, hunted and deported a huge portion of the White and Indian minorities, sending them northwards from the ISA border.
As many countries were now gearing up for WWIII, the Azanians had not only rapidly militarized their country, but had also built a substantial war-time industrial complex for the production of new weapons, many of which would be of domestic creation. The ISA was now not only the first African nation to have a massive indigenous war-time industry, but the only African state to have modern cities that were so rich and advanced that they rivalled European and American ones to some extent. One might even go so far as to say that they rivalled those of the CRE in sophistication and energy as many of them were based on Russian modelled cities. By the time the Age of Cataclysm (WWIII) had begun in late 2014, the ISA was the richest African State to ever exist, with a GDP of $5.798 Trillion, which was larger than all of Africa combined. The evidence of this prosperity was in the urban complexes that had and were being built up by the ISA government, with cities like:
1.Cosmo City: Capital of Northern Azania (a Province). A beautiful and colourful new city, famous for casino gamblings, entertainment, hospitality, African culture and food. Many Westerners have even called the city "The Las Vegas of Africa" due to it being located in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. It is found in Northern Azania (New name for the extensively much smaller Northern Cape Province). It is located in the province's Special Economic Territory (A zone in each Azanian province designated for the purpose of propping up a particular market economic activity by the Premier Supreme, although regular property laws still apply, there are way lesser restrictions. These are mostly used to cluster economic activity into one area, thus making it easier for the government to build new cities and commercial centres for the surrounding rural periphery, allowing urban development to spread. In this case, the market activity being propped up was gambling, tourism and hospitality, the zone allowed rich people from the CRE to the EU, USA, China, and all over the world, but most importantly – citizens of the ISA, more liberty to obtain a gambling licenses and/or a hotel business permit), and is the country's entertainment powerhouse and Africa's hospitality hub. By the start of WWIII, it is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world, although it was still in the process of being built.
2.Ulwandle Metropolis: New name for the extensively bigger, more industrialized as well as much more advanced Cape-Town City. It is the Capital of Western Asha (new name for the Western Cape Province). Although the city lost much of its former tourist market due to its rapid and uncontrollable rate of Industrialization and urban expansion, it is one of the richest cities in the ISA and the entire southern hemisphere. This is due to its prominence in Rareethrum Field-Pumping, which is responsible for not only fuelling its industrial economy, but that of other provinces in the ISA as well.
3.Furaha: New name for the new, larger and extremely advanced Durban City. With the second biggest harbour on the African Continent, it is the Capital of the redrawn province of Kwa-Zulu (with the "Natal" part having been removed). The city is prominent for its trading complex, with the third largest container-port as well as third largest harbour in the whole country and basically the whole continent.
4.Adeapolis: The State Capital City of the Indepedent State of Azania (replacement for Johannesburg), although it boasts no coasts, it is the biggest city in the entirety of Africa. Although it's still a conurbation, it has been projected to become the Megalopolis of the nation after having sprawled out of the Gauteng Province (easily engulfing the now non-existent city of Pretoria). By this time, the city had become a Super African Cosmopolis, projecting its might all the way to North Africa. With a large tourist market, after the 'Great Clean Up', the city is one of the cleanest and prettiest cities in all of Africa. With an economy that surpasses entire countries combined, it is largely famous for its breath-taking African built Skyscrapers and successful Prosthetics engineering, which brought Russia and Japan's BAPA (Bio-Anatomical Prosthetics Augmentation) to Azanian soil and Africa in general. It easily cements its place as the most advanced city in African history.
5.Port Stal': New name for the much larger and more industrially and economically advanced city of Port Elizabeth, found in Eastern Azania (new name for the much smaller and redrawn Eastern Cape Province). It is famous for its Russian built industrial and commercial centres, which is the reason why its named using Russian dialects (meaning 'Port Steel'). It also boasts Africa's largest and busiest Container-Port and Harbour and stands out as one of the Southern-Hemisphere's busiest cities. With Rareethrum Fields into its periphery, it has industrialized and modernized into a true mega-city.
6.Tsonga City: Newly built Capital and Metropolis of the smaller Mpumalanga Province, and by these times an extremely advanced modern metropolis, famous for housing the Sontonga's Horn (or "Horn of the Nation"), which is the newly formed Parliament of the Independent State of Azania, also acting as the home of the Premier Supreme. This building thus symbolizes the loss of power by the APLP's ESC (Executive Secretariat Council) as it could no longer make laws. Prominent for its Rareethrum field-pumping, the city is one of the ISA's industrial hubs.
7.Setschaba Metropolis: New name of the Capital of the Lesotho AAR (Autonomous Administrative Region). Although initially under-developed, it has been rapidly growing into a very prominent city, with an increasing GDP per Capita as well as towering skyscrapers for commerce. It is in many ways nothing compared to other cities in the ISA, but by 2015, has slowly cemented its place as the fastest growing metropolis in Azanian history after the ISA government began rapidly modernizing the city after the AAR system had been established in early 2011.
N.B: ISA (Independent State of Azania) was further sub-divided and thus went from a 9 provincial state to having 23 prominent Provinces (Including annexed Lesotho and Swaziland).
These were cities amongst many that were the reflection of the massive success of The True Transformation Act. With WWIII taking place, thus rendering NATO a non-belligerent in a possible conflict in Africa, and with newfound economic and military strength, the ISA could finally begin accomplishing the expansionist designs of its ideology. By February the 1st, 2016, in a bid to combine all of Africa into one nation, the Premier Supreme would order the massive and modernized AFAS (Armed Forces of the Azanian State) to invade neighbouring nations to its north using unbridled force. The Azanian Army would start by invading neighbouring Namibia and Botswana.
Namibia had also been sanctioning the ISA from 2004-2008, so although economic hostilities with the country had ceased, Mashinini knew that the German population of the nation, which constituted less than 1% of the population but still owned more than 45% of the nation's land, would never agree to Namibia's union with the ISA, and with so much wealth, they could pressure the nation's government into siding with them, which they promptly did. As a result, under orders from the Namibian Government, the nation's army was to resist to the bitter end even though they were massively outnumbered and ill-equipped to find a modern army like the AFAS. After days of getting slaughtered by the much more powerful, well outfitted and trained ABA (Azanian Black Army), what was left of the battered armed forces of Namibia would surrender after the extremely formidable Azanian Black Navy(ABN) had sunk the entire Namibian Navy and then blockaded the nation's entire coastal belt before a sea-to-land invasion was carried out. On the 15th of February 2016, Namibia would capitulate to Azanian control, and would quickly be annexed into the ISA. Comically, many of the nation's civilians would celebrate their nation's annexation by the ISA, with many regarding it "a union that was formalized by the military". Meanwhile, days later, a very similar invasion of Botswana would take place after promised aid from Western Europe and America never came. The only difference between the two nations was how quickly the Botswanan army surrendered, particularly since an astonishing majority of servicemen in its ranks supported the ISA government as many of their relatives were living in the nation and sent money back home.
Another target for the Azanians was the small and economically ravaged nation of Zimbabwe, who's people formed one of the biggest of African refugees the government had naturalized and assimilated into Azanian society. The nation would first be occupied by the Azanian Black Army on the 16th of February, and although the Zimbabwean Army had first resisted, it was quickly dispatched after the majority of it's servicemen had defected to the other side, particularly since the nation was Azania's earliest ally. The nation's ruling party – ZANUPF, regarded the sudden invasion the biggest betrayal in diplomatic history, but Mashinini had always been critical of the party's corruption, and secretly regarded its leadership as "a stain on Africa's dignity". The President of the nation – Robert Mugabe had died from a stroke two years ago, and thus made it easier on Mashinini's conscience since he was one of Mugabe's biggest supporters. After talks with the nation's community leaders in the Sontonga's Horn in Tsonga City, on the 19th of February, Zimbabwe would officially be annexed into the growing ISA after severely lacking Zimbabwean patriotism made it an easy task to annex the nation, although it would still have to live under "relaxed" Azanian occupational laws for some time in order to dismantle dissidence and establish control. In fact, many of the people there were also happy, in their view, Azanian leaders were far more capable, and since their nation owed a great debt to the ISA during the peak of their economic woes, they could not side with the ZANUPF government, which had become exceptionally corrupt and self-preserving.
In contrast to the opinions of the majority of Zimbabweans, like the leaders of the latter nation, the leaders of other African nations did not feel the same about Azanian aggrandizement. To them, this sort of "pseudo Pan-Africanism was akin to colonialism and unwarranted violent military aggression against sovereign independent states" as boldly said by Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete. To them, Azanian expansion was a threat to the stability of the continent, to which Mashinini considered a laughable argument considering how "unbelievably unstable the continent is". Either way, the ISA would be condemned internationally for its actions, which were a clear breach of the Treaty of Adeapolis, in which Mashinini promised no further aggrandizement of Azanian territory, and after its leadership refused to withdraw its troops from the invaded nations, Azania would be kicked out of the AU (African Union), and the leaders of the nations (i.e. Mozambique, Zambia, Angola, Tanzania, Republic of the Congo and the DRC(Democratic Republic of Congo) that opposed Azanian occupation would meet in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where with US backing, would subsequently form the African Commission for the Independence of Azanian Satellites (ACIAS) , which after having been granted sufficient authority by its member-states and the United States of America, would declare war on the ISA. Immediately converting the supranational commission into a massive military alliance against the ISA. Mashinini was bloody livid, and considered the conference in Ethiopia, its subsequent proceedings as well as its declaration of war, an insult to all Africans, and one he would not forgive. Fortunately for him, with three nations captured so quickly, the morale in all the branches of the Azanian military was high whilst his opponents were uncertain and divided, however, Azania's enemies were massive, and the AFAS leadership was highly concerned and worried about a Soviet style overrun of the entire Southern African region. Only time would tell.
Meanwhile, the Azanians had turned their attention to Madagascar. Although the Azanian government was not interested in the poor island due to its population largely comprising of the Merina people, whom the APLP initially did not want to assimilate into their new African Empire due to their initial impression of them "lacking of native African features", they were however worried that if the island was to be potentially captured by an enemy, it's proximity with Azania's Eastern major cities, industrial grounds and ultimately the Azanian mainland itself, could pose an existential threat to their war effort against the US-backed ACIAS, particularly taking into account how incredibly astronomical the growth of the Eastern coastal belt of the nation was due to its exposure to the massive Asian market and the immense Russo-Japanese Trade Bloc. Plus, they also believed that the island would also provide a good natural harbour (considering its flat coastlines) for naval warfare in the Pacific should NATO inevitably get involved with Azania's war with ACIAS. Thus began the Azanian plan to amphibiously attack the island nation, dubbed Operation Maji Meusi (literally Swahili for "Operation Black Water").
Unfortunately for the ISA government, the CIA would find out about this pending military operation via espionage, and would instantly go on to make this information public, thus scaring the leadership of Madagascar and pushing them closer to the USA and NATO, plus the fact that the CIA used documents it had falsified in the publication of the operation's finer details, meant that the government of Madagascar had their population's almost undivided support due to the fact that the CIA falsified documents detailed a plan that involved the massive "ejection" of the nation's Merina population into the sea. Clearly Azanian efforts to get revenge on its own white population via it's vast expulsion of not only the latter race group, but its Indian population using the notorious 'Big Directive' decree was coming back to bite them in the rare because it stood as proof that the Azanian government was more than capable of driving out an entire ethnicity out of a nation, thus meaning the people of Madagascar fully believed the propaganda included in the publication of the amphibious invasion's documents. For Mashinini, the operation was an almost instant disaster, although the nation's military leadership insisted they keep it alive, and merely postpone it. So even though the CIA had successfully slowed down the Azanians operation, it was still relatively on, meaning the newly formed ACIAS was worried as the large and improved Azanian Navy was clearly capable of facilitating this mission as proven in Namibia, although the ABN (Azanian Black Navy) would still need a significant amount of time and resources to prepare. As a result, ACIAS would respond to these plans by signing the Mutual Defense-Aid Scheme on the 26th of February in Nairobi, Kenya. This document was publicly offering military aid and assistance against Azanian expansion to any nation that needed it, including Madagascar. Meanwhile, the APLP would also have to clearly rethink their amphibious assault operation as it would definitely require way more resources than initially required since they had obviously lost the support of the Merina people, whom although they ironically considered "fully-fledged African natives of partial Asian ancestry", refused to believe any Azanian counter-propaganda efforts to this end. All negotiations for a peaceful resolution had clearly been exhausted, war on the continent was inevitable. The African Theatre of WWIII had been created.
To be continued...
