Description After investigating VTOL tactical transports for much of the 1960s, by late in the decade the USAF had shifted focus to more practical STOL types. The Advanced Medium STOL Transport (AMST) program of the 1970s was focused on replacing the C-130 with a type that could handle larger cargos than the Hercules while operating from short forward airfields. This resulted in the Boeing YC-14 and McDonnell Douglas YC-15 demonstrators, but Fairchild also put forward a design that would have been powered by four Rolls-Royce Pegasus engines with thrust vectoring.
