The Beginning
Hartwig was only three months old when her mother took her up on the mountain. She was the only surviving puppy from her litter, born out of Grima and sired by Eyrr. The moon was full on that night, shining brightly in the dark sky. Stars twinkled throughout the darkened sky. There was a slight breeze as mother and daughter climbed higher and higher on the side of the mountain. At one point, Grima picked her daughter up by the scruff because the young puppy was growing weary from the traveling. After Hartwig had gotten the chance to rest for a while from her mother carrying her, Grima set the puppy back down on the ground so that Hartwig could walk on her own.
The mother and daughter traveled for roughly two hours before they reached the spot Grima had wanted to take her daughter. There was a ledge that looked out over the forest below them. Grima lowered her head toward Hartwig and gave the puppy a gentle nudge, encouraging her to move closer to the edge. Hartwig was hesitant, but she trusted her mother and moved forward, stopping about two or three feet from the edge of the cliff. The puppy looked out over the edge and a shiver ran down her spine. It was quite a long way down from where she was standing and her eyes were wide.
Grima tilted her head back and let forth a soft howl. As her song died down, she lowered her head to look at her daughter. Hartwig had turned her head so that she could watch her mother, fascinated by the sound that had filled the night air around them. Grima gave a faint nod to her daughter before tilting her head back to let her gentle song fill the air around them a second time. Hartwig turned her head to once again look over the forest below them before tilting her own little head back and letting her puppy voice join in with that of her mother. Hartwig was howling for the first time in her young life.
Grima’s song had fallen silent as she watched her daughter howling for the first time. A smile spread across Grima’s muzzle as she listened to Hartwig’s strong, but very young, voice fill the air around them. In that moment, Grima could not help but feel a touch of pride for her young daughter. As Hartwig’s puppy song came to an end, she turned her head to look at her mother. Her little tongue lolled out of her mouth and her little tail wiggled behind her. Grima gave a nod of her head and smiled at her daughter. Encouraged by that, Hartwig lifted her little muzzle and began to howl a second time.
Eventually, Hartwig wandered away from the edge of the ledge to return to her mother. The night was dragging on and the puppy found herself feeling more and more tired. Hartwig lowered herself to the ground, snuggling up close to her mother, and began to drift in and out of sleep. Grima lowered herself to the ground so that her daughter could get more comfortable. The mother and daughter pair would remain where they were for the rest of the night before heading back down the mountain in the morning.
