SangriaIt isn't February until
a cloud settles over
your right eye in the dark.
Your blanket cannot keep
this fog at bay.
Wake to unwrap the package
of your heart. Admire
the sky on fire tonight,
wheels churning languid
beneath your palms.
Crescent moons bobbing,
edges soft and bleeding,
spirits in horizon blending:
citrus into brandy,
cider into wine.

Design notes
Made this for Valentines 2018.
Going with the same technique as "Our Starry Night". Going with the flow, No references are used except for the Seagulls, which I've never painted before. My intention was to go bold with the colors. You can call them colors of love I guess lol
Color related keywords : Hope, Optimism, Love, Romance, Strength, Emotions, Vitality, Feminine energy.
"Every dark cloud has a silver lining."
Hope you enjoy the art just as i enjoyed creating it. Have a wonderful day

Hello, here from ProjectComment .
This picture looks symbolic, and you can easily imagine that the girl is sending her love to her lover who is somewhere at or beyond the sea. The title confirms this thought, but it would already be obvious even without seeing the title. It's a nice touch that the sun is a heart. That's very fitting for a Valentine's card.
It seems using a reference for the seagulls really paid off. I think they look great. It's also good that they're white, because everything else is so full of color, it's good to have a little calm spot to rest your eyes on.
The color choices are very bold, expecially the bright green. Usually colors like that easily ruin a painting, but the use of bright green and yellow is limited enough not to cross the line. The contrast between red and green is stunning - actually looking at this for a longer time makes my eyes hurt a bit. It's worth it, though.
I can tell that there is a bit of dark green on the waves on the left side, but overall, the dark parts of the sea don't display much variance. I wonder how it would've looked like if the color changed more with distance. The reflected light matches the source and looks realistic. It took me a moment to notice that some of the clouds are purple and not black - very subtle.
From up close, it looks like the woman's hair is on a high ponytail. I don't know if that's the intention or if it just accidentally ended up looking like that, but if it's intended as being loose, there's something unnatural about it. The left side is clearly higher than the right, so if it's a ponytail, that would explain it, but in that case, it could use a bit more highlights to give it shape. Also, the exposed upper back looks a bit too light to be in the shadow.
Overall, it's a successful picture. You took a big risk with the choice of colors and it paid off. It takes a lot of guts to use that shade of green intentionally as an advanced artist. I bet most wouldn't have the courage.

The effect of the sun set on the water is so nice, love how it came out. Even her dress seems to be part of the ocean, it almost melts in. Color of love is a very appropriate name!

Hello! I'm here with a comment from
A very stunning piece, i have to say. The use of colors create a very dreamy, and almost psychedelic atmosphere. Had a listen to the soundtrack you provided too, and it fits well with this piece. The colors used are also rather unconventional, leaning more toward being rather fluorescent, which is an interesting choice. However, I'm not too sure about the neon green, as it makes the center of the sunset look almost glaring, especially when mixed in with the bright reds and yellows.
One of the things i like about this is how painterly it looks, and it shows a lot in the ripples of the ocean and the coloring of the sky. Which is why i feel that the heart-shaped sun itself looks rather flat against all this flowing, and detailed scenery. But i think this can be fixed with just giving the sun some shading of its own. Remember that the sun is brighter at the center, so adding some darker reds would give the sun more dimension (or you can use a lighter color instead to brighten up the center, if you prefer). Also, even as the sun is setting, a halo can still be seen lining it, though it'd be thinner and more faint. Adding a shade of orange (or whichever bright color you'd prefer) around your sun would make it look like it's glowing.
As for the girl and the seagulls, they're nicely drawn, and i liked how you handled coloring the seagulls. The shading is just dark enough to create a sense of shadow, without making the birds look muddy and grey. Same with the yellow highlighting, and it makes the seagulls sound out against the background too. For the girl, i think the shading on her skin could've been more harsh, as it seems too subtle. The rest of her looks good though, especially the shading of her dress and hair.
And that is all the criticisms i have for this fantastic piece. I hope you find them helpful and keep up the good work!

I love bold colors, but I know what you mean. In the case of this piece though, I think that it works. The way you pulled the colors through the waves, draws they eye through the piece.

Beautiful, Enclave!! The color of the ocean -- it's stunning. Overall, it feels like such a really personal moment, and magical too. In the horizon, is that the sun that's in the shape of the top of a heart? I love the texture, and her figure is well done too, so super kudos!!!

Thank you very much! I'm so glad you like it. It is indeed a personal and a magical moment for the lady. Yes, that represents her love and her optimistic nature is represented by the bright colors, such as orange. I'm glad you took the time to enjoy it and Thanks again!

You know my favourite part is the texture, no doubt about that. The brushstrokes add so much movement to the painting but not in a way that makes it dynamic or less serene, on the contrary, in a way that reminds me of the lull of the waves or the movement of a rocking chair. The colors are very bold and unexpected but I find them much more attractive in full view than on a thumbnail view. I think you should think about the transitions between opposing colors. I don't know if you've seen any of Scott Naismith's youtube videos about color but one of the basic things he suggest when using vibrant opposing colors is to have large areas of desaturated color between them to act as a buffer. Now obviously that doesn't apply everywhere, especially if you want to create tension and contrast but I think it's very applicable to landscapes, especially with a calm atmosphere. Another thing I would maybe change is the reflection on the water, I think it should be concentrated on one area because physically the light being linear you'd only see it reflected within one plane. Let me know what you think

Thanks a lot for the critique my friend! You know how much I appreciate them
You made a great point and I agree, this looks more like a child messing with paints. But that's exactly what I did here. I did this as an experiment so making it realistic was not my goal at all. Let me explain the process. I've heard that listening to music while painting brings a certain rhythm to your brush strokes depending on the genre. So here I used only one artistic brush and few others only for finish touches. At the blocking stage, I was listening to heavy metal and afterwards I switched to soundtracks (calm/emotional) and started defining the shapes with minimal focus on blending. I kept my mind focused on the setting and imagined I was there, in this woman's shoes. So I think it was really fun to try something like that and I like the results. However, as you said, this does not look professional at all. I appreciate linking me this amazing artist and even though its traditional medium, I could learn a lot from him so thanks a lot friend! That approach you suggested is very interesting! I really need to try it out now and find its true potential myself. I'm so glad you mentioned that friend.
My approach when blending two opposing colors is, first I block with a hard brush, 100% opacity. Then using the same method, I keep blocking the forms with a smaller brush size. Afterwards I reduce the opacity to 50% and using a hard brush, keep refining and finally, switch to a soft brush with 20-30% opacity and blend it completely. You have be mindful of the brush stroke direction all the time. Then I use the sponge tool to de-saturate/saturate, where necessary. Try it out if you haven't already and let me know what you think
Having said that, this will be the last of the experimental paintings for next two months probably, except for the Figure drawings. I'm planning to do a detailed and a realistic painting and it could be a landscape or an illustration. When I'm painting it i will definitely keep your advice in mind my friend.
As for the reflections now that was total utter newbie mistake from me. I should have kept that in mind but it surely didn't happen. So you were spot on about that. I guess I was too lost in my own thoughts and in music haha
Thanks a lot again my friend and I really appreciate the the time and effort you spent on this critique, to help me improve.

Hehe, don't mention it I'm glad if you found it even a little bit helpful or thought-provoking.
This sounds like an awesome experiment actually, and I applaud and admire your willingness to experiment, I hope you don't give that up.
As for Scott, his way of thinking about color is quite universal imo. I mean even digitally there are multiple ways to come up with color schemes. You could just pick it off a photo or choose it from the palette, you could use swatches, or adjust it on the HSB axes or you could also mix it from different colors like traditional artists do. In fact layering with colored pencils has had a huge impact for me on my digital coloring as well, so traditional approaches can definitely be looked at universally.
I especially liked his video where he balances coins on top of a color wheel and explaining how different amounts of colors can be balanced. It's a surprisingly comprehensive way to explain it.
Hmm, that method is actually something I haven't tried. In fact I don't believe I've ever used the sponge tool at all. But don't you control opacity with your pen pressure? O.o Why would you need to adjust the opacity manually. I mean, unless you need a very very transparent layer.
