The intense texture gives him a really powerful impression of being truly ancient (like his skin continued to grow as he slept).
The arm spikes stick out (ha!) as being kind of rediculous mostly because it looks like he'd jab himself if moved them the wrong way. Personally, I'd shrink them for practicality purposes.
